They seem to believe that once comments are registered, the criticism will decrease. They are right that the criticism got harsher when they went with the guest thing, but that might just have been a run of crappy articles and defensive (Justin, I'm looking at you) authors. I am looking forward to the possibility of some adult supervision for some writers.
