Wow, he gave 1.3% of his net worth to charity. What a philanthropist.

jackson- that's funny because I was so damn confused, I thought Bell played at a bar called Taps or something. Then, I remembered that people in Chicago are much more in tune with Beer branding than with Hockey and it all made sense to me.

Outside of the apartments and liquor, he did far more damage to the sport of hockey over the years than to help it. He took a major draw in a major market and led it down a path that now competes with the Wolves for fans (and the Wolves sometimes have higher attendance).

He was a joke in the NHL for years and his ideas only hurt the Chicago fans. Let's just hope his family can get the franchise back on track after about 20 years (to say the least) of poor management. Or better yet they can finally sell it to someone that will take it seriously.

Bell's pulling out of Illinois had nothing to do with the Wirtz Law, Benjy. That was overturned long before Bell's made the decision to leave and deals with an altogether separate statute, the Beer Franchise Distribution Act of 1982.

with Wirrz gone, what can we expect first--a decent blackhawks team or Bell's return to Chicago taps?

Don't care much about the 'hawks, but I did live for a while in a Wirtz Reality building, and not only was the price more than fair for the space and location, but it was one of the cleanest and best-kept Chicago buildings I've lived in. Probably the second-best apartment I've had in Chicago (the current one is best).

..."major league hockey"?

Say it ain't so, Chuck. What would have been wrong with "as he singlehandedly made the National Hockey League in Chicago an afterthought"?

There are still a few of us around that know enough about hockey to care how it is referenced.
