3 Is the Magic Number

2007_09_sports_3_magic_numb.jpgThe Cubs couldn't help themselves Wednesday night, as they dropped their second straight game to the lowly Florida Marlins, losing 7-4 in Miami.

However, that weird sensation for Cubs fans of actually cheering for the Cardinals worked, because St. Louis did help the Cubs by knocking off the Brewers 7-3.

The losses by both the Cubs and Brewers mean that the Cubs magic number is now three.

The Cubs have one more chance to reel in the Marlins this afternoon before they turn their attention to this evening's Brewers-Padres game. Can San Diego help the Cubs out? They themselves are playing for their playoff lives as they cling to a narrow one-game lead over both the Colorado Rockies and Philadelphia Phillies for the wild card.

As we head into the season's final weekend, the Cubs can relax a little with a two game lead—but anything's possible. They just need to keep chipping away at that magic number. The Cubs certainly have the easier draw for a final series as they wrap things up with three games in Cincinnati.

Please call the police! Benjy has been kidnapped and is being held ransom by a crazed Cub fan.

LOL! I may be hoping that the Cubs blow it, but I'm sure that's that not what the Cubs fans who read this site want to have me write about at the moment. You won't find me cheering them on anytime soon, but I can at least give the objective update on the race. Personally, I'd much rather discuss Jon Garland's shutout...

In the meantime, Cubs fans kneel before Illinois' #1 team, the Cardinals, for carrying the load last night.

Chuck: Yes, but what a disappointing year for the Cards, especially after the chase they were giving about a month ago (and I am a die-hard Cards fan).

If the Cub do make it into the World Series--a longshot giving the Cubs' talent for blowing playoff chances and then finding some scapegoat to blame--I think I will, for the first time in my life, root for the American League team.

God, just writing that makes me sick.
