Street View Launches in Chicago

2007_10_09.google.jpg

Google's controversial Street View feature is officially live for the Windy City, igniting renewed concerns about privacy. It's also rolling out in Pittsburgh, Philly, Portland, Phoenix and Tucson today.

Privacy has been an issue since Street View launched last spring, though not so much a legal question as a personal one. Google captures the images by having a van with cameras on top of it cruise around; technically, that's no different than standing on the street and snapping pictures. But there's still a yeesh factor — the photos are hi-res enough that you can read license plates and recognize faces.

We've been poking around for about an hour but so far have been unable to turn up anything hilarious, salacious, incriminating or super interesting. But rest assured, we will continue to search. If you find something crazygonuts, you know how to holla.

Tucson, please.

Found my car.

Check out this list of the "alleged" Google Street View privacy invasions already discovered in the US:

Google Street View

There is even a Google Street View capture of a woman going in for an HIV test!

Holy hell that is wild.
Of course my neighbors that are always hanging out in front of their house got caught on camera hanging out in front of the their house. Hilarious.

Google Street View has nothing on Flickr.

Sweet, I was looking for a way to kill a couple hours this afternoon.

Wow, those photos are recent, too. I'd say 2-3 weeks judging from the state of the (former) MegaMall by my house. It's a bit creepy.

I like how they stop just short of the westside. Like on pulaski and laramie there's a craps game in the parking lot. They totally turned around.

I was guessing late August for a lot of them, based on what movies were playing (The Ten, Two Days in Paris).

omg, you can totally see me masterbating in the window. isn't it bad enough that jesus sees?

in all seriousness? seeing my house and my momma's borrowed car out in front freaks me out. were our lives so bad prior to this technology? i suppose that question is only relevant if you accept the notion that this isn't a government conspiracy to create 1984 like conditions around us, and that executing this project in broad daylight by a major corporation under the guise of free information isn't a work of staggering genius.

i'm SO CREEPED OUT!

i must be dumb; i can't figure it out. does it not run on safari or something? i see no street view option.

Yep, definitely just found my car, license plate and parking ticket clearly visible.

I don't know if this is creepy, but it certainly feels creepy.

At Facets, the picture seemed to have been taken between Sept 14-16, since they were advertising that the Bela Tarr event was coming up on that Sunday (which was the 16th), and that Noriko's Dinner Table was playing that week (14th-20th).

The Chicago Theatre was advertising Family Guy on Sept 15, so it was probably on or a few days before that day.

The Landmark was only playing that set of movies from 8/24-8/30.

Pipers Alley had those movies 9/14-9/20.

There appears to have been a Cubs game that just ended when the picture was taken. That's like every other day.

The Empty Bottle is completely blocked by a massive Bud Light truck.

People are waiting outside the Metro for Taking Back Sunday, which seems like it might have been Sept 2.

I can't think of any other places with signs on them. But it seems like all these were done in the last six weeks or so.

and the Simpsons Kwik-E-Mart is still there

here

The shows on the marquee at the Sub-T are for 8/27 8/28 & 8/29

63rd and Oak Park is the Simpsons themed 7/11

yep just found my car, kind of creepy. And it was taken on Sunday, Sept 2nd. My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult was playing at Double Door, still on the marquee

North Clark just south of Fullerton was taken in August, as the August Beer of the Month sign is up on Ravens. I moved at the beginning of August and I can see inside my old apartment and what the girl living there has already done to it! CRAZY!
