Halloween, for some of us, is the most wonderful time of the year. If you're of the same mindset, get thee to the Music Box Massacre III tomorrow, a 24 hour horror movie marathon filled with spooky, scary and gore-y goodness.
The third installment fittingly offers 13 movies (along with a short, and several vintage trailers) hosted again by Rusty Nails. Fred Dekker, the director of The Monster Squad (being shown this year) and RoboCop 3, and Coralina Cataldi Tassoni, the star of Demons 2 (also being shown), will be guests. There's also live music, an auction, a midnight costume contest, and lots of vendors selling horror memorabilia through Saturday evening. And for $1 an hour, along with the ability to come and leave as you wish, it'd be hard to find a cheaper way to spend your weekend.
We're hyped about watching Todd Browning's Freaks — a Frankenstein-esque movie about circus freaks dealing with the real monsters, the beautiful people — on the big screen. The conclusion to the marathon is Stanley Kubrick's classic, The Shining, another film we're excited to finally see in a theater.
We survived last year's Music Box Massacre with flying colors, only falling asleep during Deep Red. We love Dario Argento, but his soft camera angles and soothing music were like a lullaby after more than 17 hours of movie watching. Thankfully this year, his and Lamberto Bava's Demons 2 promises to be a bit more lively.
The full schedule is available online, and eFilmCritic.com has a wonderful write-up about each film.
Music Box Massacre III, Saturday 12 p.m., Oct 13th-Sunday, Oct 14th 12 p.m., Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Ave., $24 advance, $29 door.

I just rented 48 Days Later, not bad except for the dumb kids and of course the remake of Holloween is on my list. They should have consulted with me as I know the best horror. The Shinning is good, but what about classics like Salem's Lot and Lets Scare Jessica to Death. Those are Horror Movies, and of course you can toss in some Vincent Price, stuff, yea word!
I'm so mad I can't make this. The Monster Squad, though mostly because of nostalgia, is still one of my favorite movies. It's cool that they wrangled Dekker to stop by. Maybe next year they can do Night of the Creeps and get him back.
I'm so jealous ... I want some over-buttered / salted popcorn horror goodness too!
I'll be there. With you. In more than spirit. (Yes, I'm that creep).
We? Are there more than one of you? Are you royalty?
Why are young journalists so afraid of using the word 'I'?
Maybe they like to change the lineup. I think Let's Scare Jessica To Death was there last year.
