The great white whale is symbolic of white America racism that drives and dominates Imperialist capitalistic white patriartical male society, i.e. Captain Ahab, ultimately binding him up and dragging him down to his watery dark cold death of his own making. Ishmale represented rare multi-racial solidarity,deep humanity,critical thought, and reflection. Funny,way past Brotha Melville's death, that book never sold and was considered a failure. Even today folks still walking around thinking one of the greatest American classics is little more than a fish story

I'm confused--what does that even mean? It's a fictional character and the book series is complete. Has anyone got any juicy backstory on Ishmael or Captain Ahab?
