Jill Morgenthaler, Blagojevich's deputy chief of staff for public safety and homeland security tendered her resignation Tuesday, effective November 1. She apparently called Rich Miller to confirm speculation that she will challenge freshman 6th District congressman Peter Roskam next year. The retired Army Colonel and former psy-ops specialist has been the topic of speculation for while, circulating ballot access petitions and raising money.
Unfortunately for Morganthaler (and Democrats in the 6th), she comes with a lot of baggage. Besides her role as the Army's spokesperson during the Abu Ghraib scandal, and the blog she wrote in 2004 accusing the media of not reporting the good news out of Iraq, she also comes out of the Blagojevich administration. With good dirt like that, trashing her name won't be hard. In fact, she's already been the target of a hit piece designed to piss off Democratic activists in her district. All of which is bad news for Morganthaler, who hasn't even announced her candidacy yet. If you can't beat a Republican in the 6th, join them? Sounds like a losing proposition.

Look, Roskam's district is still mostly Republican, and putting up someone who is not not liberal (er..."progressive") is probabaly a good plan for the democrats. Of course, if they couldn't capture the seat last year when (1) it was open, (2) democrats seemed to be winning everyhere, and (3) Tammy Duckworth was the benefit of incessant media fawning, it's probably a stretch to think they can capture it in 08.
The Blago connection bothers me more than her defending torture. Blago hired an aide who is a federal convict for supporting terrorist and then hires someone who defends torturing terrorists. Sometimes you have to wonder if blago has a clue at all or is his head filled with elvis songs and ways for him and his wife to make money through state contracts and selling state jobs.
So just because she's a veteran and was doing her job while deployed to Iraq that makes her a DINO?
I suppose you're fine with Roskam's hard-line arch-conservative record like his votes against SCHIP (twice, so far)?
Given that the Capitol Fax post you link to includes the beginnings of platforms from Col. Morgenthaler that are "progressive" your labeling seems premature. Besides mss2400 makes a good point -- this is the 6th, not the 3rd (or even the 10th). Col. Morgenthaler clearly disagrees with Roskam on several issues or she wouldn't be running, but her Army career doesn't automatically make her a DINO... Let the woman speak before you punch her in the gut.
That said, you could have at least indicated what her role with the Blago administration was: Director of Homeland Security. Are you opposed to Tammy Duckworth because she's the head of Veteran Affairs, another post within the Blagojevich admin?
Obviously she's DINO to Kevin. Where's her Che t-shirt? Her time spent learning about the revolution in Chiapas?
Absent such evidence of her worth, she must be a fascist.
It would be nice if Chicagoist got someone Right of Kevin Robinson to post about politics for a little balance. It shouldn't be hard to find someone, nearly everyone else is to the Right of him.
