Just want to add a resource: www.abuseofpower.info.
It's a website for survivors of police domestic violence. It was a lifesaver for me.

Holy cow. This Peterson guy is quite the character. He's probably already looking for wife number 5. I hope she stays away from that bathtub.

The end of the story says "Daily Southtown."
"Special to the Daily Southtown" is their way of saying one of their reporters didn't write it.

When you reference Southtown articles in the future, you may want to look at who actually wrote it. The one in question was supplied by their sister paper, the Sun-Times.

no, laura. it is a creepy story. it's just that it's so much easier for us all to get our heads around a creepy, four-time-married, cop who might have two wives who've been murdered than to talk about who ever's been involved in killing, like, 400 women in Juarez. I just wonder whether the media, including the sun-times and chicagoist, devotes too much time to one-off disappearances, mine rescues, Cessna crashes, mountain climber strandings, and not enuff to chronic gang violence, a city's murder rates, whether grand theft auto is in vogue or not, whatever -- stories that affect more than a few dozen people.

i think the state police doing the investigation is to avoid a conflict of interest. he is a sargeant, after all. state police handled the case of his other wife's death, too.

peyton - are you really going to argue that a 50 year old policeman's 23 year old wife going missing isn't creepy when 1) his first wife died in mysterious ways and 2) the police force has asked the state to step in to investigate?

Margaret, I wonder if the increase in missing persons stories has to do with the fact that people seem to eat them up when they're reported. Just look at the rush to judgement of three of these commentors on the fishy bolingbrook case. WTF does 'if he even looks like a creep it will really put this over the edge' even mean?

I want to see a picture of this police sergeant. I figure he has to be at least be 50 years old if he's been a 29 year veteran of the force. Its kind of creepy that he was married to a 23 year old in the first place, then his first wife was found dead; if he even looks a little like a creep it will really put this over the edge.

Stacey Peterson? Yeah, I don't think she's coming back. That is a super sketchy story. Especially since her husband, the cop, is like 50 years old. Not good.
