Chicagoist and commenters, great suggestions. The holidays, in particular can be very tough on people.

CALL people who you think are at risk. That is one thing I have learned. Ask them to meet you for a cup of coffee. It'll make you feel better just as it makes them feel better.

Daley causes depression, that's for sure. I say we get rid of his little leperchaun ass before he screws up the winter for everyone and his brother.

the worst thing you can do is fight winter. you should instead embrace it. buy seasonal food and make comfort food, drink glog, tea, hot chocolate. work out (as suggested several times) and one of the best ways to beat the blues is to go to a place with an indoor pool. the lights, heat and humidity should perk you up in no time.

as for me i am going to go to the russian turkish baths this year.

I was going through a really bad breakup (is there any other kind?) a few months ago, and I did many of the things listed above to help me get through it. I'm taking a class at the Newberry, and it's just great. Once a week I get to sit and talk with intelligent adults about a topic we're all interested in.

Another great thing to do: have regular dinners with friends. It's a great alternative to going out and drinking in a crowded bar where you can barely hear each other. My favorite part is just hanging around afterwards, talking. Every time we did it, it was lots of fun, and I always think "how did my life become so busy that this got scheduled out?"

Dude, regular exercise is the best treatment for depression, ever. I once read somewhere an interview with a physician who said that if there was a drug that could somehow mimic all the benefits of exercise, she would prescribe it to everyone, in large doses.

tons of exercising, but also public drinking, invest in a flask. I also keep track of all those people who bitch about it "being too hot" in the summer, maybe this winter instead of screaming at them, I will kill them :-)

Happy Friday

exercise is a must. it's unbelievable how different i feel when i'm working out in a good stretch. everything clicks better, especially around 'that time' of the month.

These are great suggestions! I'm determined to beat SAD this year. So for so good, but it's still sunny in November.

Yoga and exercise are great ways to beat SAD.
