Curmudgeon, and everyone else that missed my earlier response, to reiterate, I do now know Colette, and have no personal vendetta against her. The point is that she is of limited skill and that videos and PR like this does nothing to forward a positive image of female DJs. scumbriety and staybeautiful, thanks for the recommendations, I'll be sure to check them out.

This is sad, pathetic crap. Tankboy, I hardly see Chicagoist as a launching pad for what seems like a pointless personal vendetta against this person. Sure, the video is boring or whatever you want it to be - but your post so completely reeks of your taking personal offense from her that it's just completely out of place on Chicagoist. i'm gonna have to concur with scumbriety here. on everything. if you want female dj's with real talent, check for sr-71 and j.lee. the rest could learn a lot by watching them.

really? you really put chess "mother" hubbard in there as one of chicago's female dj's w/ "oodles of talent" take the earplugs out next time you hear the girl spin, train wrecks & horse's galloping all day. There's a reason she isn't spinnin Subterranean on saturdays anymore, I've seen on more than one occasion the place go from a packed house to a cleared room when she gets on sloppily throwing tracks together like there's no need for skill when dj'ing. If you want to mention female dj's w/ talent how about SR71, J.LEE, AMPM. I'm guessing the writer of this must be a close friend of mother hubbards, that would be the only explaination as to why that name would even come up as a dj w/ talent.

I have to agree with the posters who are down on this one, not because I find it misogynic (don't you think that's a better word than misogynistic which sounds like it has too many syllables or maybe needs another one to sound even worse, like "misogynistical" or even "misogynisticalistic"), but because your video "proof" does absolutely nothing to advance your premise that she is a talent-free dj who gets gigs based on her looks. She may in fact suck as a dj, but the video gave me zero basis to believe that or otherwise. Yeah, she seems like someone I probably wouldn't want to hang out with. So what?

Had you read Mark Guarino's print article in Chicago magazine: http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/December-2007/You-Should-Know-DJ-Colette/ you would see that she's an "aspiring pop diva". Pop = image, people! Also, I believe production of that video was Chicago Magazine's maiden voyage into multimedia offerings on their site. Not defending the magazine or Colette, just saying if you don't know all of the facts, people, stop the hate...

WTF. Like her or not, this is a pretty innocuous video about a famous-in-her-own-right Chicagoan. But this: DJ Colette...is one of those vain, semi-talented knob-twiddlers that wouldn't garner any attention if she wasn't wearing tight tops while keeping regular appointments at her local salon to keep her roots uniformly colored makes you sound like a fucking fucking asshole. Yeah the only thing infuriating about this video is that Chicagoist wasted a post on it. Its dull, boring, but would not illicit the reactions you seem to think it would, Tankboy, for anyone who does not have a history with or some sort of vendetta towards DJ Colette. Nothing in this video would remotely make me think she is talentless, or getting by on her looks. This appears to be yet another part of the ever burgeoning "youtube culture." Would not warrant a response at all had you not posted so angrily about it Tankboy.

First off, the "hipster" girl DJs out there are far from ugly. In fact, many are better looking than Colette. Second off, musically I don't mind Colette. She is a decent DJ and vocalist. Good for her. What is puzzling to me is that she isn't THAT good looking. The fact that they shot such a silly video of her getting her hair done and her at a photo shoot trying to be sexy is just kinda sad. She looks like a generic sorority girl with weird bumps on her face and a little more junk in the trunk. Nothing to write home about. She should focus on her music. That's all. Cause she isn't a model material. Not even for Sears.

Hey, I got rejected by Liz Phair and still managed to write nice things about her for years afterwards! So it ain't that. Y'know, it's like this. I'm sure Colette is a decent person, but she has a looong history in Chicago, and her reputation is not one that, in my opinion at least, is built on talent. And this video merely underscores that point and makes her seem even more shallow and superficial than she probably is. My point is that her image is not the sort of thing that would inspire someone like Liz Revision or Ellen Allien ... instead it's the sort of thing that gives us people like DJ Diamond. (P.S. I do still love Heather from the SuperJane collective Colette was part of.)
