Alderman Owes Landlord $40K

2007_11_30.brookins.jpgAlderman Howard Brookins Jr. of the 21st ward was hit with a lawsuit this week that claims he owes $41,819.18 in back rent for the Loop offices of his law practice. Brookins didn't know about the suit until the Sun-Times contacted him. Sounds like a fun phone call:

S-T: Hi, this is a reporter from the Sun-Times.
Brookins: [dryly] Grand.
S-T: I'm calling about the lawsuit.
Brookins: The what?
S-T: The lawsuit? That your office landlord filed this week? Trying to get you evicted and to pay all your back rent in the next five days? It's like, 40 grand.
Brookins: Oh, crap.

That's just our alderman fan fiction; not a transcript of actual events.

Brookins says he's been "going back and forth" with his landlord at 100 N. La Salle and that he needs to "go talk to them and figure this out."

Aldermanic lawsuits are always fun, but this one is extra so because Brookins is running for states attorney. (Eeeh ... you might want to vet the comments on your campaign site.)

Does this mean the "Chicagoist" isn't throwing its support behind HowHow, because they didn't even mention that he was running for States Attorney?

That pics a keeper though! I'm wondering who the "Up" brother's as in "Ward" and "Fed" are going with the for Cook County States Attorney? I was trying to get over Brooking's sleazy look and feel, but now its kinda hard. Hummmm I wonder where he got that sleazy look and feel from? Perhaps his father, former state sen and funeral home director Howard Brookings Sr.?

Spook, having met Mr. Brookins on a few occasions, I can attest that he is a very likeable guy. However, I don't plan on ever being his landlord.

He is one of many minor players in town who seems to be trying to boost his name recognition with a hopeless (for him) political race. Why else is running? Did someone put him up to this so he can the split the vote among African-Americans? The guy has absolutely no chance.

Anyway, I haven't made up my mind who to vote for. Although I am Republican, the State's Attorney's office is one that can have a Democrat, as long as it's a Democrat that is not TOO beholden to the machine. One can dream.
