Spook it started out as a cop show in season one and has evolved into a look at much much more. Calling it a cop show now is being shortsighted. I believe that there is more to the underside of our city than just right and wrong. I do believe there are many gray areas. I just wish there was more personel responsibility and less making excuses. Just once I would like to see a story about how someone got caught doing wrong and the reaction from the streets wasnt hes a good kid just turned his life around was working on his ged and joined the choir and was mentoring the youth to not make the mistakes he made. Whats wrong with the truth He was a criminal jagoff whos the reason the kids cant play outside and the block will be nicer with him in prison/dead.

Jeff

I just finished "Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets" but using the Corner's deeply humanistic and interpersonal narrative approach on Homicide detectives’ just didn't work. The Characters/Detectives came off as one dimensional, totally unsympathetic and empty of humanity. It was o.k. as a book, but could not compare to The Corner.

Fed, interesting that you like The Wire, as you seem to look at the underside of our city in such a right and wrong formula. This I guess explains why you ere the only person I've heard to refer to The Wire as a "Cop" Show, as if it’s centered around “cops” as opposed to a real mirror of our society in crisis

"And check out the Book The Corner, which was before the movie. Its one of the most incredible books I've read."

Check out Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets while you're at it. It seems like everything David Simon touches is gold.

I can't wait until he adapts Generation Kill for HBO next year. That book was amazing.

Vise Beer, I know. My bad, I tossed in the Law and order TV show, just to be pointlessly confusing, before I dug into Bud. Actually the last time I watched law in order was when it first came out years ago, with the original two cops. Now it just seems silly from what I have seen. But word on The Wire. But I'm one season behind as I'm HBO-less, so Season Four in the "Schools" is coming out in December on dvd. And check out the Book The Corner, which was before the movie. Its one of the most incredible books I've read

I hope Brother Muzone is still in Season Four!

Spook, what I meant was that you had nominated Fed and Ward Up for a column entitled Law & Order (not the TV show). Law and Order is network trash. The Wire is where its at. New season starts in January. Can't wait for the best show on television, EVER!

One suggestion: A Chicagoist writer who is an expert in the details of development would be nice. It would be nice to read a bit more about behind-the-scenes wrangling over proposed projects.

You could tell us an occasional story about battles, perhaps with some inside dirt, between aldermen, the Daley administration's planning department, community groups, and developers.

Chuck Sudo, Kevin Robinson, and a few others have written some nice articles about development and urban plannning in the past. I don't mean to slight them in the least.

It would be great if they would start digging deeper or if you could find someone new if your current staff is too swamped. Thanks for listening (no sarcasm).

Vise Beer

I'm more of a HBO Wire Corner Boy, can't wait for season 4 to come out next week on DVD and Will Smith's "I Am Legend" on the big screen!

Oh and Mr. Bud Selig! I see you!

Please allow me to retort!
Chicagoist has this new nifty little feature that allows its dear members, such as I, to review past contributions by fellow members, such as you! So you might want to carefully reflect before you ask for a cyber dance with Ye Old Spook because your comments have more have more grammatical crumbles and mold, and spots in it then the six month old unpackaged blue cheese that I removed from my refrigerator yesterday. And said mistakes are all the more glaring because you don’t have much to say, unless it’s about sports where you spend most of your time commenting. On that note, chumbly, please allow me to continue to do what I do, and you stick to sports, because it gets deep out here and you sir are clearly apt to drown.

vise77:

That's funny -- after wading through the misplaced and misspelled words, Spook's criticisms of all things political makes me dumber.

I would like to nominate Spook for Law & Order as well. His pointed criticism of all things political makes me think.
