It seems that the media goes into histrionics about the mundane more and more each day, and not just about the weather too. Seriously guys, how many 'what you don't know about donuts, staplers, orange juice, insert innocuous item here, could result in the excruciating death of your grandmother or infant' reports have you been subject to whenever you turn on the evening news?

It's just the media that have discovered a new version of "if it bleeds, it leads." Most of us don't pay any attention to their shreiking. They just embarrass themselves.

It is crazy whenever there is a little snow in the forecast that all the stations go on storm watch. Anyone who hasnt just moved here from a warm weather state should be able to handle a couple of inches of snow. I liked this city better when it was hog butcher to the world and had bars on every street corner.

Actually, I wasn't really talking about this blog so much as the TV (especially) and print media. My apologies for not being clear. The blog entry, in fact, was short and to the point, unlike the idiots on TV and some of the blowhards in the Trib and Sun Times.

What is more alarming is that Chicagoist staff writer Tim State siad there was no precipitation in the forecast this week. Not sure who's weather report he is watching, but it was obviously wrong!

Granted, I've been in Chicago off-and-on for only about 10 years, so perhaps I am missing something: Why on earth do the media and many residents treat each snowfall as though it were on par with, say, a partial eclipse of the sun? I've read enough history to know it has snowed often in Chicago before-hell, I even remember a few snowfalls from previous years. I know enough about geography and climate to make an educated guess that snow is a fairly regular event in these parts during certain times of the year. I once owned a car, and know enough people who still do, to say with a fair amount of certainty that nearly every commuter realizes the frustration and hazzards of rush-hour snow. I am not talking about the blizzards that shut down the city, but rather the relatively mundane snowfalls that are treated almost as seriously as the virgin mary sightings in toast, tomatoes and underpasses. Then again, it's not like there is anything else going on.
