Mrs. Karen Kass is far from rich. I live in Lincoln Park, went to Latin (on a scholarship) and (get this) was on their soccer team, and I'm far from rich. And I can't blame Mrs. Kass's sentiment. I think a couple of pieces of dog shit on Latin's wall is nothing compared to what they've done with the public process. They've shit all over it.

Here are some tidbits: The Lincoln Park Advisory Council hosted a September 2006 meeting featuring Jim Chronis of the Park District, who gave a presentation about soccer fields. He told the council that CPD was planning five new soccer fields, and that three had already been sited. Asked pointedly by LPAC members whether Latin's field was one of them, he replied very clearly that Lincoln Park was not being considered. Three months later, a Park District vote quietly approved the contract, which was not made public until May of the next year. LPAC was very angry but felt it couldn't do anything about it.

This issue also brewed in 2002, when the Park District presented the same idea. When the public came out in swarms to protest, the plan was shut down. Four years later, they did it without any public input whatsoever. Only the powerful can do that.

Another point: Lincoln Park is filled with people from diverse backgrounds. Two blocks west of Latin are the Marshall Field Apartments; near that is Cabrini-Green; all along Larrabee is low-income Urban Renewal housing; there are halfway houses and senior buildings throughout the ward; and much of the ward has housing for De Paul students and young working professionals. I know very few rich people in Lincoln Park, and my family's been here for almost 40 years.

Finally, Laird Koldyke is a Latin parent, and he also sits on the Park District board. They say he recused himself on the Latin School vote. Big deal; everyone knew which way to vote. And everyone knows where the buck stopped.

This issue is far from dead, and with your help we can stop the Park District in its tracks. You can see more and give your support at cklpp.org.

HILARIOUS!

I graduated from Payton in '05 and Latin is less than a mile away. People hated our school too for buying up community buildings for more space and using lots for parking.

but POOP???? what a way to go!!!

It is a favorite past time of some Chicagoist posters to be mad at rich "Northside" persons. Why? Well, because, they're, well, rich. Yeah, and let's see...selfish. Yeah, they're rich so they must be selfish.

Anyway, in this case, timocity, you are getting mad at the wrong rich, selfish persons. The essentially private astroturf field belongs elsewhere.

And you are forgetting that the people who picnic in Lincoln Park are frequently from lower income neighborhoods elsewhere in the city. A walk through the park on any summer weekend makes that fact obvious.

Does anyone really find it surprising that a lake front, Northside middle-aged women feels privileged and entitled to throw dog crap at a school because she doesn't want kids playing soccer in HER park? Yep, another example of that irrational, entitled thinking that apparently only other overindulged lake front, Northside people can understand. Pathetic. The city should let Latin build a dome stadium in the park and let these lunatics protest something really intrusive. Rich nutjobs protesting other rich nutjobs. Fun.

Holy crap. Dog crap, that is. I just saw the following quote from a drama queen, er, I mean a Latin School official.

"In addition to being an act of vandalism, the actions presented a serious health risk to our students and the community," said Katie O'Dea, the school's spokesman."

Apparently, this 98 pound grandmother is a one-person biological weapons factory.

First, to Spook, thanks, as always, for the free publicity for the ongoing successful boycott against Macy's.

Anyway, that clean-up guy is showing some excellent form. In the top photo he looks like Chris Chelios shooting that brown "puck" into the upper right hand corner.

And I agree with the anger against Latin School. Latin said that the park land---the citizens' land that they are effectively getting for free---was not being used enough. Well, guess what? Green space, converted to astroturf and bleachers, is no longer green space.

It WAS being used as green space, by everyone from frisbie tossers and picnicers and simply those who looked at it as part of the surroundings as they walked through the park. That in itself is an important use.

This land gift to Latin is by pandering park officials and the Daley administration to a group of wealthy persons who can afford to use a field elsewhere. The last time I checked, the city isn't going to be making any more land in Lincoln Park. Now we will lose important green space to a private school. The deal stinks. Like that stuff on the window. And no, I don't live in the Gold Coast and that's not my poop.

The Latin School are AWFUL neighbors. They've used clout (in chicago? Color me shocked) and deep pockets to ram through any expansion or vaiance they want. While I don't condone the poop-bombing, I do understand the frustration that people in the area feel.

The bit in the ST story you missed, at the end where the Latin Spokeman claims that children were placed at health risk. From tiny pellets of pop? Note that the poor janitor is using a broom (and no gloves) to clean up the poop. I wonder if that same broom was used near any of the precious darling Latin students. Oh no!
