Three Thumbs Up

Man is there a lot going on tonight. Are you sure it's only Wednesday? Because it sure feels like the party is already kicking into high Friday mode. The last few weeks have been a tad lackluster, music-wise, but December is taking this year out with a bang! Here are just a few of tonight's options.

  • 2007_12_twothumbsdown.gifEvan Dando resurrects The Lemonheads tonight at Double Door. We caught him last time he came through town and must admit that not only did he have his shit together, he put on a hell of a show. Rounding out his band this time around band are Bill Stevenson and Karl Alvaraez. Not only are they the same duo that appeared with Dando on the last Lemonheads disc, they just so happen to also be members of The Descendants. This should be awesome.
  • Much like our positive review of the last Redwalls disc, here's something we never thought we'd hear ourselves recommending: Silverchair at House Of Blues. Long gone is the ghost of the 3rd gen unholy mixture of Nirvana and Pearl Jam that cocooned the band's earlier output. In it's place is smart and lush Beatles-esque pop. The single "Straight Lines" off this year's Young Modern was, surprisingly, one of our favorite singles of the year. It's propulsive drive and lofty reach comes off as inspirational without resorting to cheese.
  • Um, is there anything Steve Reidell can't do? He's one-half of The Hood Internet, one-fifth of May Or May Not, one of many that run the behind-the-scenes show at Metro, and now he's a label mogul with his imprint Two Thumbs Down Records. O.K., maybe not a mogul, even though he started the label it's now run as more of a co-op with everyone involved pitching in. Judging by its roset, though, Reidell is without a doubt a a gentleman with refined taste. Tonight's show at Schubas functions as a showcase for most of the label's roster with performances from mt.st.helens, Ozark Cousins, Driftless Pony Club, May Or May Not, Sleep Out, Kris Racer, Dialogue, and Post-Honeymoon.
