I brought a bunch into work for the office potluck yesterday and had at least three coworkers tell me how they're the favorite Christmas cookie.

Whoa! I am so pleasantly shocked to see this, because I thought I was the only one who knew about these. My mom makes 'em every single Christmas and has for as long as I can remember, and they're always my fave. There's something about that cracked white crust and the deep chocolate beneath. Drool.

Eeeee I used to make these with my mom. She hated making them because we wouldn't ever chill the dough enough, and it would turn into a sticky mess. It does not pay to be impatient, people.

Either way, they're effing delish.

There was a recipe similar to this in the Tribune's cookie section a few years back called "Blackout Cookies." The only major change was the addition of Chocolate Extract, which makes them extra-chocolately, and using melted unsweetened chocolate instead of cocoa. They, too, have the same cake-like consistency and sticky batter. They're yummy.
