A 14-year-old Illinois girl was on a cruise off the coast of California with her family when her appendix burst. The USS Ronald Reagan was dispatched to rescue her, and they did--including a helicopter transport between the ships. [Trib]
Mayor Daley says he had no idea his son Patrick had invested in a sewer company that did work for the City. Reading from a prepared statement, the Mayor said "I did not know about his involvement in this company. As an adult, he made that decision. It was a lapse of judgement for him to get involved with this company. I wish he hadn’t done it." [S-T]
Pantone has unveiled its color of the year for 2008: Purpleish! It succeeds 2007's, CotY, which was reddish. Pantone 18-3943 Blue Iris will be the color of the year because "'it best represents color direction in 2008 for fashion, cosmetics and home products,' explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. 'As a reflection of the times, Blue Iris brings together the dependable aspect of blue, underscored by a strong, soul-searching purple cast.'" Soul-searching purple, eh? Is this what it's like when words don't mean anything anymore? Haberdashersy monkey consultation! Hey, it's fun. [Pantone]
Someone mailed an unidentified powdery substance to Mayor Daley and Aldermen Edward Burke (14th) and Bernard Stone (50th). It turned out not to be toxic. [Trib]

They have been suspending city employees for not reporting or misreporting ethics information.
I expect no action of contrition from Daley for this and, on the other hand, I expect he will never take such an excuse from any unclouted city employee.
Will somebody else PLEASE run for mayor and win? Anybody?
All the best to Grant Achatz...

i love the notion that if someone else were mayor, insider contracts would immediately go away, as if daley invented nepotism or something. every single person who works for the city, knows someone. it's always been that way and won't be changing if jesse jr. or anyone else is mayor. also, no one's going to beat him. he's probably trying to stay in office until he can pass the torch to this son their grooming for political office.
overall, daley's done a great job with the city. i do think this olympic bid is a collosal mistake though. hopefully, we lose it

and yet, that's how it works in 90% of the country....
You don't get out much do you Kev?
Wow, that's a bit of irony. The guy who apparently has been around enough to know that Chicago is famously corrupt in comparison to other cities is cast as some kind of naive shut-in. Me thinks perhaps it is Kev who should be telling people to get out more.

I think Kev's 90% is a little high, but it is true that other cities do corruption less and some have cleaned up their act considerably. I agree, though, that losing Daley will not be the same as losing the Machine. Too many people make too much money off of it here. The feds will have to come in and wipe the place clean to get near to cleaner government. We don't have a culture of it here.
I've lived in Boston and New York. The "conflict of interest" culture and its grotesque cousin, machine dominance, is worse here. People seem to think that they are not doing anything wrong. We're just "working the system," they say. "You get what you can." Chicago IS worse.
