I've lived in Boston and New York. The "conflict of interest" culture and its grotesque cousin, machine dominance, is worse here. People seem to think that they are not doing anything wrong. We're just "working the system," they say. "You get what you can." Chicago IS worse.

I think Kev's 90% is a little high, but it is true that other cities do corruption less and some have cleaned up their act considerably. I agree, though, that losing Daley will not be the same as losing the Machine. Too many people make too much money off of it here. The feds will have to come in and wipe the place clean to get near to cleaner government. We don't have a culture of it here.

Wow, that's a bit of irony. The guy who apparently has been around enough to know that Chicago is famously corrupt in comparison to other cities is cast as some kind of naive shut-in. Me thinks perhaps it is Kev who should be telling people to get out more.

i love the notion that if someone else were mayor, insider contracts would immediately go away and yet, that's how it works in 90% of the country....

i love the notion that if someone else were mayor, insider contracts would immediately go away, as if daley invented nepotism or something. every single person who works for the city, knows someone. it's always been that way and won't be changing if jesse jr. or anyone else is mayor. also, no one's going to beat him. he's probably trying to stay in office until he can pass the torch to this son their grooming for political office. overall, daley's done a great job with the city. i do think this olympic bid is a collosal mistake though. hopefully, we lose it

They have been suspending city employees for not reporting or misreporting ethics information. I expect no action of contrition from Daley for this and, on the other hand, I expect he will never take such an excuse from any unclouted city employee. Will somebody else PLEASE run for mayor and win? Anybody?
