Abandoning a kid at a food court isn't the answer, the mother in question simply needs advice on how to swing the hammer over her child. Parents need to show their children the corners and borders you must adhere to in life. Life is going to smack you plenty in the face when you're an adult, parental discipline is the training that prepares a child for it. Spoil the child? Kids don't pay bills, go to work, or have to watch what they eat. They're already spoiled.

And thanks, Mom - for kicking my ass when I deserved it! I am much better off than the other entitled morons because of it.

Two year ago around this time, I was coming home on Ye Old Blue line with my then girl friend of the month. We’d been drinking at the Christmas market in Daley Plaza. It was a great time, making fun of suburbanites, seeing who could steal the most yellow "Support our Troops" magnets off SUV's and other cars, etc.

Any way, a big brotha got on the train cursing out his kid, I mean cursing and threatening to "beat his A$$" The kid was so sad and terrified! And get this, the dude was wearing a freak'n Santa's Hat! Yea you heard me, a Santa's Hat!
So way what do you expect from a drunk’n Spook!
In a loud stage whisper, I said. “Wow that kid’s got a great roll model there, I know how he's gonna turn out, a chip off the old block! I'm sure he will also terrorize his kids and every one else too!" The “father” screamed at me (every one else looked down studying their wool mittens uncomfortably) and threatened to get off the train at my stop and beat my A$$. I just smirked at him. Had he got off at my stop I would have sucker keyed him in the eye with long office key! The dude was too huge and I'm too good looking to lose my teeth! Heck I would have been doing the boy a favor! Any way you can see why my relationships last only a few months :-) But screw it. Kids don't ask to be brought into this fu%ked up world. And I think when we see one being abused, it’s our obligation as adults to say something. Heck I wanted to call DCFS on the mother of this Mexican kid who lived on my block because she over feed him! I mean the kid was so fat it was sad. And news flash, what do you call a French Mastiff that you scream at and beat as a puppy? You call it 135 pounds of anger and fury. What do you call a French Mastiff that you treat with love but spend a lot of time properly training? A great dog who follows commands 95 percent of the time. Kids are the same.

And no Fed Up I don’t think your being racist, but I bet you think I’m being crazy when I say that girl should have had to had her tubs tied after she had her first baby because it was at this time when she got on DCFS’s radar! Wake up people, kids are not toys! Parents should have to get a license first!

Well, Mrs. Johnson, I agree that child abuse is not restricted to a particular race, but I need to say that I do have kids and would never "pop" them on the bus (or elsewhere) no matter what my sons said to me. I don't really care if that parent was having a "bad day", to take it out in the form of violence against their child is unacceptable.

And regarding your anecdote -- while both are not exactly exhibiting the highest parenting standards, I think if I had to choose I would pick spoiling a child over punching them hard in the face. But that's just me.

Interesting comments. I only know what I see. I see so much slapping where I work on the South Side that the place is like a three stooges convention.

have you seen little white kids at toys r' us having fits and calling their mothers "b*tch" for not getting them that video game?( a game that is rated for adults at that)..i was at toys r us on western and this little white boy about 7 or 8 yelled at his mom and called her a b*tch and told her he hated her because she woulnd't buy him "grand theft auto". you know what she did? NOTHING. she said "thats not nice". the kid started throwing toys all over and she wouldnt eve ntell him to stop. an employee was looking so aggravated and im sure she was the one that had to clean that mess up later...my point being....everyone has their way of dealing with their children. i do not agree with the woman leaving her son in the mall. but i think there should be some type of discipline that children MUST follow. i have seen parents hit their kids on the bus on the train and everytime the parent was WHITE..i actually popped my daughter upside her head on the bus one time( she said something WAY out of line) and a BLACK lady told me i shouldn't do that to her...i honestly think that in those situations, unless the child is seriously hurt( like in your case) people should mind their own business..especially if they don't have kids.you don't know what that parent is going through and what kind of child they have..and some parents will forget about their kids and take out their anger on you...trust me, i've seen that as well.

I am ready for politically correct readers to call me racist, but the fact is that some members of the African-American community have an interesting idea of what constitutes appropriate discipline.

At or on the way to work on the South Side, I have seen many, many mothers slap their kids HARD. I'll bet some of you have seen similar things.

On one occasion, I witnessed a mother punch her seven-year old with a closed fist, converting his mouth, face and shirt to a bloody mess. I separated the two and "guided" the mother up against a fence while someone called 911. The mother's explanation in between "F--- this and F---- that" was that her child deserved it because "....he pushed me first..." Cops looked for the kid's front tooth on the ground but it turned out he had lost it previously.

I ended up having to show up as a witness against the mother at the old Domestic Violence Court building at 13th and Michigan. She served 90 days.
