clearly, this guy had issues that ran a little deeper than being offended by some teasing.

I suppose that should go without saying. Anyone who shoots people over being teased for a haircut clearly has some larger mental/social pathology that needs addressed.

I'm not so sure that individuality and sensitivity are the elephants in the living room for this issue.

80th and Halsted is a very, very violent neighborhood. If 1 guy, 4 guys or 10 guys standing around a liquor store there want to tease someone, they should prolly make sure they are sober, armed and quick on the draw.

Yes, I like living in a world where people can be free to express themselves in whatever way they want to.

But I have to take issue with your statement about 'good mohawks' versus 'bad mohawks'.

imho, there really are no 'good' mohawks. I think that Jolie's kid looked idiotic with that mohawk, btw.

When my son was in 2nd grade he wanted to get his ear pierced. He also wore his hair long and I supported his individualism...but he did get teased an awful lot. I agree with vit, I used to tell him the same thing: you choose to be different from the mainstream, so you have to accept the fact that there are going to be people who will tease.

(Looking back, it's just amazing how cruel young children can be.)

As someone who sported all sorts of weird haircuts and clothing styles in the 80's and having dated someone with a Mohawk during that era ... all I have to say is 'if you can't handle the heat, get out of the kitchen'.

If you have a funny haircut, people will make fun of it. Get over it.

Don't get me wrong, I like funny haircuts, and support the right of anyone to dress like a freak (and actually believe it should be encouraged ... I'd prefer to live in a world where people dress in odd an creative ways), but if you do so, you have to have enough sense that you might get a comment or two on your decision.
