Last night, after the clock struck pumpkin time, conversation turned, as it often does, to handwriting and type design. Who's a continuous stroke 8 writer? Any snowman-style two circle drawers? Should the bottom and top circles be the same size, or should the bottom orb be bigger? What shape should the counter be: perfect circle? Tall oval or fat oval? Tear-drop? And thus, the search began.
What's the best 8? Here are the first 7 8s we could think to put in the running, but we're all eyes. What's your favorite 8? Is there an iconic Chicago 8? If we type the number 8 again, will it lose all meaning? 8!

L-R: Arial, Helvetica, Futura, Impact, Baskerville, Optima, Times New Roman.

No "8" in the Chicago font?
Huh?
(BTW, Basker is not vile.)
In high school drafting class, we had to use the two circle, snowman style 8.
But few people do that in real life when writing it as it's an inefficient way of writing it out.

I use two circles sometimes. Efficiency isn't everything.
helvetica is always best.
and i myself prefer the snowman method.
The bottom should always be bigger.
The bottom should always be bigger.
I'm trained as an architect, so if I'm 'printing', circle on circle, with the upper circle being just slightly smaller than the lower. If I'm scribbling, one fluid motion.
I think if there's got to be an "8" that is inconic for Chicago it should either be:
A. in the "Chicago" font on the Macintosh
OR
B. The one the city uses for street signs (like 83rd St)
OR
C. the font the Bears use on the uniforms... just my opinion.
I'm a snowman man myself.
