Ward:
That was not a story. Not a story, not a story, not a story, since she is NOT a reporter. Yes, it is garbage that was rehashed from the Defender and not investigated at all, and somebody deemed it worthy of the front page, but it was not news, and well, i'll stop there.

Julia:
Bless you.

It's a McPaper! With no Dear Abby! I was about to drop the Trib anyway (I'm tired of the endless Bush apologetics), but with the Sun Times also on a diet, I may have to go with the NYTimes, or else give up on dead trees all together.

I think I'm the only person who still prefers the actual newspaper to reading it online. I feel like I miss tons of stories if I only read the online version, whereas, with the paper, I can read/skim from cover to cover, and know that any stories I miss, I miss on purpose. I check online for updates and stuff, but I strongly prefer the print version.

I did like the improved version today, too. far less newsprint on my hands when I was done.

I agree, Ward Up. Newspapers hurry their own demise when they abandon investigative journalism. Sure, it's expensive and time-consuming, but it's the one thing newspaper can do better than other mediums. It's sad to watch once-proud publications pander to advertisers with vapid gift guides and best ofs while dumbing down their newsroom. This may stanch the bleeding in the short term, but it's also a good way to send a more serious, consistent readership to the internet.

Let's pray that the Tribune is able to make it. We need somebody to do some investigative reporting in this town. In fact, we are losing reporters that do basic factual reporting. The Reader is down in manpower. The Sun-Times is really in the toilet.

Perhaps some of you saw the pathetic front page anti-cop story in the Sun-Times today. The Sun-Times sinks lower every week. It has become a paper of false allegations and race-baiting.

Its numbers are way down. In desperation, it panders to advertisers. It panders to readers. It has become a sorry excuse for a true newspaper. Remember that the hired truck expose is two years old. That was a great series. Yet you can see how far the Sun-Times has fallen in the past two years.

Of course you can't wait to wake up tomorrow for the Trib and The Suntimes, without those papers, Chicagoist would have no content.
