Rich & Tina Sittin' In A Tree?

[Ed note: We couldn't decide on a photo to run with this. So...here's the most recent ep of 30 Rock in its entirety. Now if you'll excuse us, we're going to go buy a place on the floating city of New Chicago]

No word on whether or not they’re k-i-s-s-i-n-g. However, could true love be blooming on this Bluest of Mondays between our favorite ex-pat SNL writer turned sitcom star, and our less-than-favorite local columnist/movie guy and bon vivant wannabe? Not if you ask Tina Fey. Her claws came out in a new Playboy interview where this exchange took place:

PLAYBOY: "Some older male comics like Jerry Lewis have argued that women aren't funny. Does it piss you off, or is it easy to ignore?"

FEY: "The only people I've heard say that are Jerry Lewis and Richard Roeper. That's not a strong showing. Yeah, Richard Roeper is hi-larious. Remember his radio show? Me neither. . . ."

You may recall that the far more famous Chicagoan John Belushi also said something similar, and you may be familiar with his work from a little show called…Saturday Night Live. Tina must have just forgotten that. It's happens. We do know that Rich does not particularly care for anyone above a size 4, but where does the seemingly misplaced Roeper-dislike come from, Tina?

Rich responds lamely with: “I didn't make the blanket statement that women aren't funny -- I said the top female comics weren't as funny as the best male comics. I also gave props to Roseanne, Whoopi Goldberg and Bonnie Hunt, and I wrote ‘Tea Leoni is wonderful . . . Julia Louis-Dreyfus is a joy to watch . . . Mary Tyler Moore was a laugh goddess in the 1960s and 1970s . . .’" Tea Leoni? C’mon. Rich is of course noting Tea’s well-known turn in the comedic masterpiece, “The Naked Truth.” The Naked what? We don’t know either, but apparently there were 49 episodes of it. Who knew?

The column from which the previous fawning appeared was printed back in ’96. The fact that Tina remembers this column specifically must have nothing to do with the fact that Tina was writing for Second City at the time, and no doubt saw it when it ran, and might have made a lasting impact on her. It must be this, says Rich: “Tina Fey's in love with me.” Holy crap. Is it sarcasm...or rampant egotism? You decide.

Continued: “I think Tina Fey is genuinely, consistently funny as a writer and a performer. She and Amy Poehler were terrific on "Weekend Update," and "30 Rock" is one of the 25 best sitcoms in the history of television. Much better than the vastly overrated "I Love Lucy." Never thought Lucy was that funny.”

How cute. Perhaps next Rich will pull her pigtails or perhaps put a frog in her lunchbox. Neither party will confirm that here comes love, nor will they go on record that then comes marriage. Both have denied categorically that then comes baby in a baby carriage.

Roeper has always struck me as a prick; the "she's in love with me" joke confirms it.

"I also gave props to"

Eww...did a man in his late forties just use the term "props"?

Roeper is lame, loud and obnoxious. The epitome of that bleeting psuedo-suburban city dweller who moves from downtown to sporting arenas to lincoln park bars and never really experiences anything close to authentic Chicago neighborhoods.

I still contend he has pictures of Roger Ebert doing something horrible and that's why he got Siskel's seat.

You know who else isn't funny? Asians. And cripples.

It's a 12 year old column. The Naked Truth was on at the time. Why are you so surprised that he would have mentioned Tea Leoni?

@simplecreature

Please, tell me where I can find these "authentic Chicago neighborhoods". I'm so curious! Curious as well to know what exactly bleeting means? Is that one of those terms used solely by twenty-something, pseudo-city dwellers living in the suburbs? Dude, you have got to tell me in what authentic part of town you and your crew can be overheard dropping this hip lingo. Fo' reelz, I will give you "mad props" for the "solid."

I went to see "Fred Claus" based on a Tina Fey review of the film. Worst movie ever. Women cannot review movies as well as men.

Another bleeting gasbag weighs in:

"There are more terrible female comedians than there are terrible male comedians, but there are some impressive ladies out there. Most of them, though, when you come to review the situation, are hefty or dykey or Jewish, or some combo of the three."

Wow!! Fancy writing, Cristopher Hitchens.

No more comments, I swear. My hipster lingo needed but an "a." Bleating. I stand corrected.

I can't wait to see the rest of the Playboy piece. I hope the interviewer had enough presence of mind to ask where Tina stands on the question of whether or not Logan Square has become too gentrified. I just KNOW she hates the fact that the neighborhood is crawling with yuppies.

Jake M: I understand the timeliness of the reference, just...Tea Leoni? When I think "Tea Leoni" I think "David Duchovny's wife," maybe "that one actress in that one 'end of the world'" movie. Not "comic actress extraordinaire."

Tracadie: Yes.

@Tracadie Harbor & Karl Klockars

Thirded.

Oh, if it weren't for Jeff Richmond and about 400,000 comedy nerds ahead of me...

I worked for NBC when that Tea Leoni show was on the air, and when I think of her, all I can think of is the promos for that show that sang her name to the tune of La Bamba. "T-T-T-Tea Leoni. T-T-T-Tea Leoni on NBC. On NBC, on NBC."
