Nominees for this year's Academy Awards were announced this morning and there weren't any huge surprises. Personally we're pretty excited to see P.T. Anderson up against the Coen brothers in both the directing and best picture categories. And everyone we've spoken too seem to think Ellen Page is deserving of her best actress nomination for Juno. in fact, for the first time in recent memory, we actually think just about all of the nominations are pretty right on.
But of course, they didn't get it all right. In the animated film of the year category the nominees are Persepolis (goin' the artsy route), Ratatouille (the odds on winner), and Surf's Up (what the - ?). Surf's Up? Seriously? There were no other more deserving features this year? Um, O.K.
And then we have the original song category. While Once's "Falling Slowly" will probably grab the win, we're still confused as to why Enchanted has THREE songs in the running. We realize soundtracks have seriously gone downhill since the days of Footloose and Top Gun, but do you really expect us to believe there's such a dearth of original music in movies that we need the same film nominated three times?
Let us know your thoughts and look for a more detailed dissection of the nominees tomorrow.

Stroger Makes Hollywood Play

Where the hell is 'Gone Baby Gone' in all of these nominations? (besides best supporting actress) That movie was incredible... I didn't think I could, but I actually liked it better than the Departed. Very disappointed...
The foreign films were waaay off. No La Vie En Rose, no 4 weeks...
None of the ones that got Golden Globe nods. Weird.
And I don't think Ellen Page deserved it. If she deserves an Oscar nomination for that role, so does Gen Y, because that is basically the "character" she played.
yeah but Page is the one who played the character so she gets the nom. she deserves it too. I know some people are saying she's not acting, she's just playing herself. if you think that you obviously haven't seen Hard Candy. she can act, she has the skills.
The Enchanted soundtrack looks worthless, while several songs in Once could have been nominated. Glad that There Will be Blood didn't get any music nominations for music as, while the movie itself was phenomenal, the Greenwood score was annoying.
I can't believe Paul Dano didn't get nominated for Eli/Paul as he was thrilling to watch, but so was Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Johnny Depp did not deserve a nomination for that so-so movie. Anyway, Helena Bonham Carter did much better in her role.
I watch too many movies.

"Once" was one of my faves this year--so lovely and restrained. Same for the songs. Totally gorgeous.
And no nod for Natalie Portman in "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium"? Is there NO justice in this world?
I was hoping (against hope, apparently) that Superbad would get a nomination for best original screenplay.
Also, I think Loudon Wainwright III should have been nominated for at least one of the oodles of great songs he wrote for "Knocked Up" -- "Daughter", "Valley Morning", or "X or Y".
Lastly, Imelda Staunton as Dolores Umbridge in "Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix". Scariest villain of the year for me, second only to Javier Bardem in "No Country For Old Men", and such a restrained performance. I think the Academy doesn't like restraint, though. If she doesn't at least get an MTV Movie Award nomination, I will start my own damn awards and send her something I made in Print Shop.
According to Pitchfork (now with extra snark) Greenwood's score for Blood wasn't eligible because most of the music wasn't written specifically for the movie. I enjoyed the score thoroughly though. Loudon should have been nominated but i feel like the Academy still clings to the kind of crap that's in a Disney soundtrack. The Elton John, Phil Collins, Amy Grant garbage that they used to churn out in the 80s and 90s. They don't want to allow too many "normal" songs in there like Loudon or stuff from Once.
Nothing for Two Girls and a Cup?
I didn't know what to make of the nomination for "Surf's Up", either. I mean, if you can nominate that, then why not "The Simpsons Movie"?
I'm wondering now if Glen Hansard should have deserved an acting nomination for "Once". Not enough of an actor? Is he like Beyoncé in "Dreamgirls" where his acting is nothing compared to the musical performances he gives in "Once"? All I have to say that when he sang "Broken-Hearted Hoover-Fixer Sucker Guy" on the bus to Marketa, I wanted to run away with him.
Oh, and I'm listening to "Pop! Goes My Heart" from "Music & Lyrics". The movie was crap (wherefore the chemistry between Hugh & Drew? Exactly.) but the songs! Perfect pop cotton candy, and if getting a song nominated would get a performance from Hugh Grant (assuming there's a ceremony, the WGA strike still going hot and heavy), then I'd easily forgive the "Surf's Up" nomination. Among other things.
Okay, I'll be quiet now.
No, jasmine, that's an excellent point. Those Music & Lyrics tunes are pretty terrific.
And the fact The Simpsons wasn't nominated is truly baffling.
Forget not the fact that Diablo Cody was nominated for "Juno's" screenplay. Besides having one of the most awesome nom de plums in recent history, she's also a Chicagoan by birth.
For the first ten minutes, "Juno" had too many ultra-clever phrases coming from Ellen Page's character. Then, she settled down a bit, the story moved along, and the movie really made you think. I thought it was great.
If that stupid twat from Little Miss Sunshine got a nod, then Ellen Page definitely deserves the award. Echoing the sentiment of a previous poster: she was amazing in Hard Candy. Even younger, no less! She's got quite the career ahead of her.
Uh, ChG, you just called an 11 year old girl a stupid twat? See, if I called you an asswipe, or an asshat, or chode, that may be appropriate, because I am guessing you are old enough to know what those words mean. You're not very nice to refer to an 11 year old as a twat. Asswipe.
