Has No One At The Trib Seen Free To Be You And Me?

We know, we know, we're hard on the Trib today, but...did you read this advice about staying home? In your "man cave" or "lady lair."

You guys, men are messy! and ladies are clean! Boys, don't worry too much about what kind of TV your "man cave" has, "as long as it's tuned to sports." And girls, your "lady lair" "won't smell like buffalo wing sauce and beer." No, just enough room for a Martha Stewart fondue set.

Let's chase this foray into rigid, archaic gender roles with one of our favorite ditties. Take it away, Alan Alda and Marlo Thomas!

What's a "sports"?

"Man cave" - See, now, I thought that meant something else ENTIRELY! I was picturing a big basement full of naked men entangled into orgiastic ecstasy. You need a TV for that?

Same with "Lady Lair". I'm picturing more a lesbian stronghold in which no "Yeah, sure, I'm totally bi but I'm not into men right now, and I have to always bring my camera!" boys are not invited. Ever.

Chicagoist forgot its sense of humor today. Or M. Lyons is tired from writing all of the site's content...

That gender marketing crap is so tired. Why can't they combine both? I'm a girl and I like fondue and karaoke, but I also like beer and football. Does that mean my vagina's broke or just confused?

No matter, I heart Alan Alda.

For some reason, I saw this today and thought: Chess for Girls. In any case, why did the Ladies half stop short of recommending Wii Tennis as a possible counterpart to Guitar Hero III? I need the obligatory weight-loss item!

I'm less offended by the retrograde sexism than the idea that people need to be encouraged to buy Guitar Hero III. "And while you're playing it you can drink this great beer I heard about called 'Corona...'"

The RedEye and the Trib are becoming one.

Fondue and a margarita maker? Much more appealing to me than a fucking beer sign. I'm a hetero guy. Bring on the frozen girly drinks!

Not every guy wants to stare at Brian Urlacher while farting into a la-z-boy.

Quit picking on the Tribune. It is hard to regurgitate press releases or write columns loaded with mundane narcissistic observations.

Uh...excluding columnists Kass, Rosenthal, Page, most of those in the sports section and a few others...but not those in the middle of the paper, or that one in the sports section.

My man cave is just an old shed with a half-empty case of Jameson and a loaded shotgun hung on the wall.

I just sit in the corner and weep silently.

There's no Guitar Hero III, but it gets the job done.

vjay -- i heart alan alda, too. ever since i was a wee lass.

and i'm desperate to find someone who has a guitar hero i can rock out on. i have yet to encounter this phenomena and i'm sooooo ready.

No, seriously: Did it really bother you? Are your notions of gender roles so thinly defined that a jest would really irritate them? Because I'm fairly sure it was humorously meant. Did you really not just roll your eyes and move on? And actually, is the OP not doing the exact same thing as the Trib -- i.e. trying to drum up "readership" by making a big deal out of a non-event? Cutesy alt-media speciousness is a shitton more annoying, if you ask me.
