It seems like it was just a few weeks ago we informed you Radiohead was coming to town. Now another alt-rock behemoth has announced they'll be making their way to our little hamlet this summer. Just today, R.E.M. announced dates for their upcoming tour in support of their new record, Accelerate, due out on Warner Bros. Records on April 1.
We've always been big fans of the boys from Athens, GA. At the same time while it's hard to deny they have produced several classic records over their career, one could argue over whether or not they are still a legitimate force, at least commercially, in the ever-changing music industry. Even so, they won't hurt their hipster-cred by bring along indie faves Modest Mouse and The National to open the show. Quite a powerful triple-header that may just wash the stink of Hannah Montanna out of the United Center upholstery.
The Chicago stop will play out on June 6 at the United Center. Ticket on-sale info is still to-be-anounced.
And because it's Monday, here's Stipe and the boys singing with some Muppets back in the day. (WARNING: Shiny happy content is involved.)
Thanks, Marcus!

Way better than the original due to:
1) Banjo mixed higher
2) Less gloss on the vocals
3) Muppet version of Kate Pierson as enjoyable as actual Kate Pierson
4) Filmed prior to Stipe's humorectomy
I'm shocked that R.E.M.'s tour date for Chicago is at the United Center. Their last few albums havent sold for shit and they're not on the Monster tour anymore. They're not at the top of their game and there's no way they'll sell enough tickets to necessitate performing at the UC. Nothing against R.E.M., I like them a lot, but their booking agent needs to get realistic.
Thanks, Chicagoist. I needed that.

oh, what i wouldn't give to sing 'furry, happy monsters' with a big group 'o muppets myself right now!!!
United Center, not my favorite place. Last time I went to R.E.M. at United Center (my first time ever seeing my favorite band, because they never really toured my native clog-filled land), this guy on something else than booze kept screaming "Orange Crush!" and kept throwing his head back, hitting me in the legs. He wasn't even ticketed for that seat in front of me. I told security, who did nothing. Later the guy stands up and swirls around and tumbles a couple of rows down. His bloody head didn't keep him from still yelling "Orange Crush!" Security came, but was scared to come near the guy until a couple of songs later.
Now, I'm all about rocking out and stuff, but I hope this one will be memorable for the band, not some crack head ruining my day...
Now that I remember; R.E.M. did play "Orange Crush" that night... after the guy got taken away...
The background monsters in that video sound like a Saturday night at your local old-man/dive bar.
I agree that REM at the United Center is no fun. Pearl Jam was able to pull it off, but they are kind of built for places like that anyway. Some of the good qualities of REM are lost in that type of arena, but I wonder if they may be unable to play smaller venues do to demand?
