Yesterday's list of buildings that need to be preserved was still ringing in our eyeballs when we came across this picture of the demolition of of the Granada Theater. The Granada was built as a movie theater in 1926 and became a rock venue in the 1980s, but was demolished in 1990.

Stroger Makes Hollywood Play

wow.. where was this located?
6427 N. Sheridan Road. It's now a parking garage for Loyola University, their Campus Safety office sits at the ground level.
It was on Sheridan Road, near Devon, up by the Loyola campus.
The building that replaced it was called "Granada Center" and was rental apartments and offices for Loyola. Now the apartment building is a Loyola dorm with offices as well and storefronts at ground level. Very unsightly.

I remember sneaking in there. There were fire escapes on the rear wall that you could climb up and break in through any of the fire exits.
The interior was extremely dark and smelled like cement and mildew. There were huge slabs of concrete that had fallen, so we were scared to walk around much for fear of crushing debris. It was around the time that everybody was listening to U2's "The Unforgettable Fire" album.
this makes me sad.
