So it looks like the Blackhawks aren't going to commit to the Indian--at least not as a slogan. But today's Trib says, "the Indian head became a logo that is one of the most admired in professional sports," and that got us thinking. First, is that even true? And second, what are the other Chicago sports logos we can geek out about? (We've already gone on record about the Owls.) These are a few other Chicago sports logos, past and present, all via the appropriately titled infotrove, Sports Logos.

Weekend Diversion: Night Of The Ponies

The Blackhawks logo is certainly one of the most admired logos in all of sports. Nobody who knows anything about sports history would argue that.
How could you leave out the Windy City Rollers? Also, the Chicago Force has a pretty sweet logo, too.
Even though I feel real queasy about the Native American imagery and the history behind Blackhawk in Illinois, it really is a classy logo. Especially when you look at Cleveland's Indian, the name "Redskins", or Atlanta and Florida State's "Tomahawk Chop".
And why is just about every logo from the 80's on feel like some over-corporate, built-by-committee debacle? The "Heat"? The "Shamroxx"? The "Ice Dogz"? Their needs to be a little imagination behind some of these.
When I was young, the "Indian" on the Blackhawk's logo had a stern look to his mouth. No smile.
Then, with no fanfare, the mouth developed a slight smile. It seemed like a subtle nod to political correctness.
I could picture Bill Wirtz saying, "Put a smile on that Indian. We don't want to get in any trouble!"
I am pretty sure the Shamroxx have only been around for a year or two. While I agree that the name is terrible, it was a 21st century mistake, not an 80's mistake.
I meant from the 80's on.
Sorry for the miscommunication.

What, you don't think pasting two pieces of clip art together takes talent?
Ugh! I've always hated the Chicago Wolves logo -- not the wolf, but the giant hockey puck behind it, which looks like a runaway truck tire.
Can someone explain that Chicago Whales logo to me?
It way looks like sperm...just sayin

The Chicago Sting are conspicuously absent in this.
Also the Chicago Stags = ROCKING LOGO
By the way, if anyone made a Decatur Staleys shirt, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
