Salerno's Friend Charged

2008_1_30.salerno.jpgRandy Salerno’s childhood friend has been charged in his death. Scott Hirschey, 44 and also of Crystal Lake, was charged yesterday with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle; he was allegedly drunk, driving the snowmobile with Salerno on the back. Hirschey was also injured in the accident and was released from the hospital yesterday. Salerno’s family says they don’t want to see Hirschey prosecuted. God, what a nightmare.

CBS 2 is compiling Salerno’s best-ofs, which are quiet charming and sweet, and the station will be broadcasting Salerno’s funeral today starting at 11am. [CBS 2, Trib]

I admire the Salerno family for wishing to go easy on Mr. Hirschey.

However, the purpose of prosecuting Mr. Hirschey is not to serve the Salerno family. Instead, Mr. Hirschey must be prosecuted in order to serve the rule of law. That, in turn, serves the population as a whole.

Citizens should not be placed at risk by persons who break the law by engaging in actions such as those of Mr. Hirschey. Each and every time a person driving a vehicle--including snowmobiles--decides to drink and drive, they should be punished sternly. When a death occurs, they should have the book thrown at them. That helps us all to be safer.

I find it weird that they're televising the funeral.

Couldn't agree with you more, Wardup.

It is not really relevant, but I wonder if Salerno was intoxicated as well.

I think that living with the guilt of killing your lifelong friend would be a pretty steep punishment on its own.

Yes, Jeremy, but that's not the point. Just because someone feels remorse doesn't mean they shouldn't be punished. Yes,living with that guilt must be horrible, but he should have thought of that when he got behind a snowmobile with a BAL of 3 times the legal limit. He's lucky that he didn't kill anyone else.

Agree 100%, Wardup. It should not matter what the family wants, or how long the feeling of guilt might last.

Very well stated, Wardup
