@ophmarketing: Corned beef and cabbage is Jewish food. The only people in America that would let the Irish live near them at first were New York City jews, and it's hard to find a good ham joint at a Jewish deli, so they adopted their corned beef instead. A good solid beef stew with soda bread is a better choice. You also get to avoid the built in pitfalls of stewing cabbage. My mom always made it smell like a sweat sock and it turned gray. A shamrock shake, meanwhile, was custom built to be mixed with two shots of Jameson. Tell your kids!

Because Christmas rides coattails on a holiday that celebrated the birth of a Roman sun god on a fixed date based on the Julian calendar, and the date Easter is celebrated is based on the Jewish calendar. Which of course all makes PERFECT sense, right, Kirk Cameron?

You probably got dispensation because it wasn't during Holy Week. This hasn't happened since the 1940s or something. Holy Week, among other things, is the week Jesus died. And St. Patrick's day is seldom a day of sorrow. There are to be no festivals, observations, or commemorations of anything other than that which Holy Week is there for: Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. If you look at religious calendars, specifically catholic ones, you'll see that March 17th has nothing on the day, while other days not in Holy Week observe the patron saints of anything. St. Joseph's Day is moved as well. It's usually the 19th, but pushed up one week.

When did the Catholic church get to be so uptight? When I was in school in the '70s, we used to get 'special dispensation' from the Bishop or the Cardinal (or whoever does that sort of thing) whenever St. Pat's fell on Good Friday, because they knew there was no way people were going to NOT eat corned beef and cabbage.

having the downtown parade during the workweek is not a good idea for a number of reasons. it used to be on st. patricks day but they changed it

even if it wasn't Palm Sunday they'd still move it back a week. why have one weekend for St. Patrick's day when you can extend it into 2? what really needs to happen is that the downtown parade should actually happen on St. Patrick's day.
