New CTA Card Machines Will Accept Credit Cards

2008_3_3.ctabears.jpg

Finally! The CTA is introducing new machines that let you buy transit passes with your debit or credit card. Welcome to the future, CTA! By "the future" we mean "the present" or "several years ago." But welcome, nonetheless.

The minimum value you can buy or add with your plastic is $5 and the max is $25 per day (as a security measure, according to the press release) for Visa, MasterCard, Discover Card and American Express credit and debit cards. The CTA will be installing 60 of these card-taking bad boys all over town, but the first five are going in at O’Hare, Merchandise Mart, Clark and Lake, Adams and Jackson, and Midway. [CTA]

CTA bears, just because we get a kick out of them (plus you already know what credit cards look like), via the CTA's gift shop

wow it's like i'm in 1995 or something!

i hate the cta with a burning passion of 3000 sons.

but i hate driving more.

No snark. This will be great for tourists and it is a WELCOME advance. If only we could get the CTA to make a map that is downloadable to your iPod like D.C. does, then it would be perfect.

Make sure your Chicago Card doesn't expire if you've had it a while. They last 4 years only. I lost $17 big ones on that!

how hot do 3000 sons burn?

Are you in for trivia at Sheffields matty? Or does your mysterious "work" keep you away?

the CTA is definitely outdated when is comes to the rolling stock, communications, and design but at least they were one of the first to use the smartcard technology.

the stuffed bears are quite snazzy for the little ones, but i wouldn't mind getting a "don't be jack" cta cap for the upcoming summer months. how sweet are they?

God damnit FINALLY. I cannot count the number of times when I've been in a cash-less rush to get on a train and the only source nearby is an ATM and I drop a god damn $20 on a pass and never use it again.

This was when I lived in libertyville.

Long live my new U-Pass.

I'm gonna end up shitting a brick the day they integrate GPS mapping on their whole system.

Sure, they may still be running late and have bunching everywhere, but at least I'll be able to check on my phone and see where they'll be at.

I really can't believe they don't have GPS tracking on the entire system.

@Mike:

I KNOW! I'd understand if they couldn't find a way to make it available to customers, but even they have no idea where their own buses are half the time.

You know those CTA folks with clipboards at various points all over the city? The ones the drivers have to slow down to check in with? Wouldn't GPS tracking eliminate the need for all those positions? A couple of people from a single terminal somewhere near a major garage could do what dozens of people do everyday.

But that would be too simple and would cut down on an assload of "sweetheart" gigs aldermen and precinct captains could hand out to friends and family.

CTA Tattler has some promising news regarding GPS tracking on buses.

spav1 - yes totally down. when can we do trivia again?

also i gotta say huberman has done more for this transit system in a year than kruesi in 10.

@matty:

What's good for you? Thursday at Sheffield's they have their lame trivia thing again, and the beer and food specials were ok.

But I only have the 80's-90's-Pop Culture greatest hits game. Smussy would have to be convinced to bring her excellent Millenium Edition to do it right, though.

Also, Huberman seems to be doing a great job. Now that he knows he has reliable funding, he seems to be really agressive with the projects again.

I liked doing the Trivia Night at Sheffields because we (almost) dominated the night and then I got so drunk that I couldn't pay attention for trivial pursuit. But I will try to be more on my game this week. Where's Smussy? And Widdlytinks?

Well I am up for sheffield's on thursday. it would be great to get the millenium edition.

We'll be in the back room. I'm bald and clinically obese, and I'll wear my yellow Tour De France hat for easy ID.

This post seems extra comical.

Wow, we have had that in New York for years and even have credit card only machines to buy our MetroCards out of in 468 stations. Welcome to 1998!

The CTA does have full GPS tracking for all buses.
That's how the voice announcement system works.
All the driver has to do is punch in the correct route number on the mobile display terminal.

Whats Hood N****!
What's really Hood!

Glade your sticking up for the Hood Matty
Hope you get profiled and arrested

Yeah, but you still have to use MetroCards. Haha. Suckers. Got any tokens?

Whoooo-hooo!

You bitch and complain about something, then find this out:
