Eight CPS Students Shot Over the Weekend

2008_3_4.kadeidrah.jpgEight Chicago Public School students were shot this weekend, three of whom died. So far, 17 CPS students have died from gun violence this school year; last year, 27 students died as a result of gunshots. That was a tragic high, and this year is on pace for the same number of young people dying--Mayor Daley? How's that gun control stuff going? Mr. Governor? We know you want to build a new building at NIU, and that's great and everything, but children in Chicago are being murdered. Frequently. Maybe there's something we could do about that, too.

Saturday night, Jose Garcia, 18, died after being shot in the chest while in a car on the 4900 block of South Hoyne. On Sunday, 15-year-old Kadeidrah "Dee Dee" Marsh was shot and killed on the 800 block of North Waller, right near her grandmother's house, as part of a dispute between one of her sisters and another woman. Later that night, 16-year-old Paris Bassett died on the 1300 block of East 72nd from a gunshot to the head.

The other students who were shot include a 7-year-old, a 14-year-old and a 16-year-old. [Trib, CBS2, CBS 2. Picture of of Kadeidrah Marsh from her MySpace page.]

thanks for presenting this story. you hear about the individual shootings so often you sadly start to not think twice about them. only after reading about a total of 17 students being killed so far does the issue become hard to ignore.

It's due to a lack of street cops and some neighbors who look the other way or draw the curtains closed when they see crap they should report.

You know what would have saved these kids?

Banning little plastic baggies.

it's truly tragic. and i really don't understand why they're razing the building at NIU. while that also is terrible, is getting rid of the building ever going to erase the memories for those involved? it seems like such a weird thing to do ... get rid of it! build a new building! then, we'll all be untraumatized. huh?

I always wondered why the shooting victims are tagged "CPS students" instead of Chicago kids? What happens to Chicago's youth that don't go to public schools and get shot? They aren't counted? It also seems to suggest that the shootings have some connection with the schools, which they often don't. Chicago Public Schools don't need any additional negative associations from the public...

Barack O'Bama has addressed this issue when he put on Bill Cosby's sun glasses and criticized black mothers for feeding their babies Pop Eye’s.

I think he thought that this was gonna go down big in Texas.

but on the real, "Soeasy"-like the Day La Soul B side song?

I think the thing is, is that CPS should be partners in making kids safe both in and out of school. Its just a hunch. But honestly I just wish we could at least be honest with those kids and say, look society as a whole doesn’t give a sh*t about you. As a matter of fact, a powerful segment of society gets rich and stays well paid off your misery, from Jesse Jackson, to Daley’s cronies, most community based non profits, etc, on down and up. So you are in this mostly by your self. Don’t expect help because mostly likely you are alone.
