I think that there are a few things she does to suppress comments and unnecessarily regulate content. A) Please limit flickr photos to ONE PER DAY. They take up a large amount of room, push down popular posts so they receive fewer page views and are never commented on. They are stupid. If you have to keep them, please make a feature and call it "Photo of the Day". B) There is no rhyme or reason to WHAT gets posted. Sometimes it has to do with Chicago, sometimes not, if it doesn't then there is some immediate and retarded explanation about why it deserves to be posted. Chicagoist is lacking a THEME, which I am incredulous about considering the name of the site. C) I have heard, though I can't confirm because I don't write for the site, that Margaret heavily edits posts before they are published. Which turns this blog from a collective into "What Margaret thinks about the goings on in and around Chicago". D) The new ads which take up a ton of room on the page and can't be commented on. E) Her retorts to comments in the posts. It is petty. If you have comments, just make edits to your original post. F) Her refusal to mitigate the obvious political bias of the blog. How about some sort of point/counterpoint? Man, that is a comprehensive list. We had all better roll up our sleeves.

Wow, Spav, harsh on Margaret. Her posts are well-written, contain few errors that are corrected promptly when they do occur, and she adds humor to the site. I think she does a pretty damn good job. What, specifically, besides the internal server errors, are her shortcomings or failures that lead you to believe she is a bad editor or administrator? Your criticisms are not very constructive unless you can tell her why.

Serious question: What does "community" mean when it comes to these types of blogs? What type of "community" are you trying to create? I heard the word community tossed around alot when it comes to describing the new, wonderful word of anonymous online communcation and/or argument, but I really have no idea what the hell it means. I suspect it is merely a buzz word, but I am probably wrong. Bias: I really have no interest in building virtual communities, as I live in physical ones that are vastly more important to my daily life, but I still wonder.

Also: Chicagoist could take a lot of hints from Gawker, including the creation of profile pages for registered users so that we could comment on friends "walls" so to speak and follow certain members. This would also make is easier to plan events without mucking up the boards.

What I would love to see accompany the Top Commenter of the Month award is an explanation as to why the editorial staff thought that the commenter deserved the award. A2 obviously participates a great deal on Chicagoist and most of the comments are engaging. It would seem to me that if there is a small group of people who don't see eye-to-eye with some of the messages here they are going to have a bigger hill to climb if they every expect to win.
