We at Chicagoist have often touted our aptitude for drinking. We appreciate the imbibing of intoxicants in just about any form they come, but probably none more than the sweet nectar of the gods that is whiskey.
That’s why we were thrilled to discover that one of whiskey’s most celebrated specialists is making a trip to Chicago. Maker’s Mark Master Distiller Dave Pickerell will benevolently share his whiskey expertise in a seminar and tasting at Delilah’s in Lincoln Park this Thursday. This is an appropriate spot for Pickerell to set up, considering Delilah’s is hyped as one of the great whiskey bars of the world (ed. note: and rightly so). The bar is home to over 350 types of whiskey and regularly holds tastings. Owner Mike Miller is a true connoisseur and revels in Delilah’s ability to attract a wide variety of whiskey lover types.
Pickerell will share the traditions behind whiskey drinking, as well as the history of the Maker’s Mark brand. There will be appetizers to nibble on during the tasting and a whiskey trivia game with prizes. (We’re hoping more of the liquid gold.)
For those not in the know, whiskey is more than just something you chase with a beer. It comes in many forms and those who partake develop palates just as sophisticated as those of wine experts.
Delilah’s 2771 N. Lincoln Ave.
Tasting: Thursday, March 13th at 6:30 p.m., $35.

I've toured the Maker's Mark distillery before, and it truly is a top notch operation. They are one of the only bourbon distilleries that still rotate barrells from the top of the store house racks to the bottom in order to take advantage of the temp changes, which is the proper way of aging bourbon that has been abandoned due to the labor involved. We were lucky enough to meet the master distiller on a tour, and he clearly knows his shit. Hope people check this guy out.
I thought that bourbon was a poor man's whisky?
Bourbon is whisky, perfected.
No, single-malt Scotch is, but Makers Mark is great.
This is why I love Chicagoist because they know the liqour. I'm trying to diversify my drinking, but only with the best. So single malt is better than bourbon right?
I wouldn't say that one is better than the other, as they have different tastes. Good bourbon is better than bad single malt, and vice versa.
What jeremy said.
