Wrigley announced today at its shareholder meeting that it's redesigning its gum packaging for old-school stick gum (as opposed to pellet gum or tab gum). They're calling it a "slim pack;" it's envelope-style and it holds 15 pieces.
The company also announced its push into more fruit-flavored gum, including Sangria Fresca and Fabulous Fruitini from Orbit. Is booze gum the wave of the future? If it is, consider this our plea for Campari gum.
Until then, we're stuck with Extra's new fruit flavors like Strawberry Banana. Strawberry Banana is the second-lowest flavor of yogurt (ahead of only lemon--who buys lemon? bleh), yet somehow it gets to be a gum. How about some savory options? Cucumber? Maybe sesame? [release]
Pics of the new packaging after the jump...

I wish peach Extra were available in the U.S. Now that's good stuff.
Strawberry-Banana the second-lowest form of yogurt? Are you mad? I get lemon being at the bottom of the barrel (or cup, as the case may be), but S-B deserves its place in the creamy middle, well above plain, pear, or, for the love of god, lime ...
Sangria? That's disgusting. Although I think there's some sort of non-alcoholic bottled drink that I always see advertised in Hispanic neighborhoods called Sangria or something close to that. Is that Sangria-flavored without the alcohol?
I love me some strawberry-yogurt, but that's not a combo I see translating very well into gum. Maybe I'm biased because I'm not a gum chewer.
Mike Thoms, you're probably thinking of Sangria soda. I don't remember the brand, but I do remember buying it a lot when I lived near Danny's Market on Western. I found it delicious, and something of a hit whenever I threw parties. Well, that and Danny's guacamole.
The snozberries taste like snozberries!!
orbit has a mojito flavored gum which is pretty good and i'm sure the pina colada flavor is widely used...i'm trying to push for a beer flavored gum or gum-ie flavored product.
Hey Margaret you guys should do a piece on Alton Logan, he needs as much publicity as he can get! That is injustice of major proportions!
mmm... beer gum. do i get different flavors? lite? pale ale?
What is wrong with lemon yogurt??
Jelly Belly's had alcohol-flavored jelly beans for years, although they are usually fruity tropical drinks.
Wait until the neo-prohibitionist right wingnuts get wind of this. They'll throw a shit fit.
awesome... if those new boozy-fruity flavors are as fantastic as the mint mojito (best gum ever that isn't "big league chew" or "crack-ups")then i'm officially psyched...
Lemon yogurt is one of my favorites! However, this is because it lacks chunks of dried-up fruit. how do people eat yogurt with those chunks? It's like eating bugs in your yogurt.
I think the new packaging is kinda lame. it's like they're trying to capitalize on the Orbit packaging, but I'm not sure it works. incidentally, I read somewhere that Orbit's packaging is specifically supposed to mimic a pack of cigarettes, including the shrink wrap and the way the pieces are arranged inside. I thought that was interesting, anyway. Can't remember where I read that though, so maybe it's bullshit.
Strawberry-banana should be called "strawhairy- barfnana."
Wow, that was stupid.
Anyway, the minto mojito gum is absolutely lovely.
I'd love a vodka tonic gum. There's nothing more refreshing than one of those.
But I dunno about a cucumber flavor. Cucumbers are delicious, but the thing that makes them is their crunch. Biting into a soft, warm cucumber-flavord gum over and over again would be a little discerning.
I agree with Julia, lemon yogurt is my favorite flavor of yogurt. And if nobody likes it, why is it always sold out when I go to look for it?
strawberries - good; banananas - good; strawberry-banana yogurt is also good ... better than that blackberry yogurt i just ate this morning. it came complete with seeds ... who needs seeds in their yogurt?
the problem i have with super-flavored gum is that i always want to swallow it. i know, i know, i'm retarded ... but seriously, when they came out with grape bubbletape, i would put a big wad of that sugary stuff in my mouth, chew it up for about 15 minutes before it started to disintegrate and i would end up swallowing it. so yes, there is a gum tree growing in my stomach, but i don't care. watermelon bubbalicious is the same way ...
I'm staying away from the "hot load" gum.
