Now All We Need Is A Ride To Aurora

2008_03_sonic.gifTo paraphrase Merle Haggard, "It's not close, but it's not bad." A Sonic Drive-In franchisee has chosen to set up the first greater Chicago area franchise of the venerable fast food chain in Aurora, in a retail development at Kirk and Butterfield Roads anchored by a Wal-Mart. You know, so the NASCAR set doesn't feel homesick.

Seriously, we're pretty stoked for this. The Sonic double cheeseburger with chili and tater tots on the side is one of those guilty pleasures for us, almost like a final meal.

Call me when In n' Out moves east.

Well, that's a start. Now if only they would have tried somewhere other than Aurora, of all places.

Hell yes! Gonna get me a cherry slushee and a burger.

Sonic is the best, it got me through college with its Powerade slushes and cheese tots. Yum.

In any case, get one by Wrigley! STAT!

chili cheese coney for me please...part of the Sonic experience is having a car to pull up in with, which wouldn't work too well in congested Chicago neighborhoods. then again, there's that Dairy Queen on southport.

Call me when In n' Out moves east.

Never gonna happen.

"The Sonic double cheeseburger with chili and tater tots on the side"

I hope Wal Mart sells defibulators.

I went to the Second City to see "Between Barack and a Hard Place" a few months ago, and the guy's wife in those Sonic commercials was in the show. It was sort of distracting.

those sonic commercials are all local peeps.

but what's with all the national chains advertising here with no local biz?

sonic. cici's (what's that?). red robin. it's a real mindfck.

i just want them to get a freakin' culvers in the city. c'mon. they'd make hand over fist.

Um, hey guys, move to Springfield. We have all that stuff. And it is WORTH IT.

Yeah, but Springfield's lame.

Signed,
Ex-Decatur resident. Which is also lame.

Tower:

You guys had an Old Navy before we did. But, it reeks like chemicals and agriculture...so let's call it even.

I would like to note that Springfield has TWO Sonics and a Presidential Museum. SUCK IT CHICAGO.

Seriously, if you want diarrhea that badly you could probably go to Steak n Shake and save money on gas and make it to the bathroom a hell of a lot quicker. But hey, if you're just dying to crap out your lower intestine then the drive to Aurora may be worth it.

Don't hate on A-town. Sure it's far from hipsterville, but it's not so bad. Wayne and Garth are from there... okay it's pretty lame.

And never say never to In n Out coming here, I mean they have a Portillo's out there in lala land. So I would think it's at least possible.

IT'S ABOUT TIME! Those Sonic commercials are such a TEASE! Them and their delicious-looking slushies...I've never even been to a Sonic.

Oh how I love Sonic. I miss it from my Tennessee days.

Gonna get me a toaster burger, tater tots and a cherry limeade. Mmm.

last commenter, i love your profile pic a lot. i finally had to say it.

I went to school in Tennessee, and sometimes I can drink myself into believing that I can get late-night double cheeseburgers and cherry limeade from Sonic. Reality turns out to be a bitch.

Mmmm...cholesterol speciail. yumm...heart attack waiting to happen, like we need more hillbillies coming to the chicago area.

Cornichon - Having lived in the South and grown up in Chicago, I can tell you unequivocally that statements like the one you just make are the reason that people from the South think that everyone from the North is smug and pretentious. A drive-in opens that some people are excited about, and you've gotta bring class, education, and whatever else the word "hillbilly" signifies into it.

might as well drive to mattoon.

In n' Out will show up here when the Cubs win the Series.
In other words, never!

@Slaphappy:

I know. That's what makes me a sad panda...

Everyone keeps telling me there's this "Patty's" something or other downtown that's like a virtual copy of In n' Out, but I have to eat it to believe it.

To be fair, so many awesome college memories are associated with my Vegas In n' Out that I doubt any fast food place could approach it.

Screw you suburban burgers and such. But can we get a Harold's chicken in Logan Square?

I once drove to Champaign with a friend to go to a Sonic and an Amish amusement park. The Sonic was the real draw.

The airing of those commercials in areas without Sonics (they have been running them for at least 6 or 7 years in the NYC area as well) is kind of ingenious. When my friends and I went to Tennessee on spring break our last year of college, we hit up every Sonic we could find because we'd been lusting after their food for a year or two. Plus, the chances of their franchises taking over the world are that much better. People everywhere already know about it.

Although I live in L.A. now, I'm third generaton 60613'er, so I stand up tall for Chicago food. But let me tell you - if there's one non-sushi related cuisine when The City of Angels has Chi-town WHIPPED it's burgers. In N' Out, Fatburger, Astro Burger, Father's Office. A yi yi it's like meat heaven.

Oh and everytime someone out here tells me how good Pink's hotdogs are, I just want to conk them over the head, hop on a flight and drag them back home so they can see a real dog.

Peace.

addison, you don't have to drag those Pink's loving fools back here, just point to the Cali Portillo's, you can get a classic Chicago dog there.

@scooter:

yeah, it's not bad...but I grew up with SuperDawg, Weiner's Circle, Gold Coast Dogs (OMG, those cheddar fries), Flukies, etc. Always been hard to dig Portillos. Maybe it was that giant Rainforest Cafe and Hard Rock staring out at me when I ate there....
