@scooter: yeah, it's not bad...but I grew up with SuperDawg, Weiner's Circle, Gold Coast Dogs (OMG, those cheddar fries), Flukies, etc. Always been hard to dig Portillos. Maybe it was that giant Rainforest Cafe and Hard Rock staring out at me when I ate there....

Although I live in L.A. now, I'm third generaton 60613'er, so I stand up tall for Chicago food. But let me tell you - if there's one non-sushi related cuisine when The City of Angels has Chi-town WHIPPED it's burgers. In N' Out, Fatburger, Astro Burger, Father's Office. A yi yi it's like meat heaven. Oh and everytime someone out here tells me how good Pink's hotdogs are, I just want to conk them over the head, hop on a flight and drag them back home so they can see a real dog. Peace.

I once drove to Champaign with a friend to go to a Sonic and an Amish amusement park. The Sonic was the real draw. The airing of those commercials in areas without Sonics (they have been running them for at least 6 or 7 years in the NYC area as well) is kind of ingenious. When my friends and I went to Tennessee on spring break our last year of college, we hit up every Sonic we could find because we'd been lusting after their food for a year or two. Plus, the chances of their franchises taking over the world are that much better. People everywhere already know about it.

@Slaphappy: I know. That's what makes me a sad panda... Everyone keeps telling me there's this "Patty's" something or other downtown that's like a virtual copy of In n' Out, but I have to eat it to believe it. To be fair, so many awesome college memories are associated with my Vegas In n' Out that I doubt any fast food place could approach it.

Cornichon - Having lived in the South and grown up in Chicago, I can tell you unequivocally that statements like the one you just make are the reason that people from the South think that everyone from the North is smug and pretentious. A drive-in opens that some people are excited about, and you've gotta bring class, education, and whatever else the word "hillbilly" signifies into it.

Don't hate on A-town. Sure it's far from hipsterville, but it's not so bad. Wayne and Garth are from there... okay it's pretty lame. And never say never to In n Out coming here, I mean they have a Portillo's out there in lala land. So I would think it's at least possible.
