It's been that kind of day over at the Bright One. First they find out that their Sam Zell video contest was won by a Tribune intern. Now they just discovered that Cal's, that venerable hole in the wall on Van Buren and Wells, is a great place to see a badass rock show (apologies to Wesley Willis).
Yeah, we know that it isn't really a secret that Cal's has been serving up some serious live action ( and cheap drinks) for a few years. Although we do have to take owner Mike Feirstein's comparison of Cal's to the late CBGB with a grain of salt; we never sacrificed our shoes to the general filth of the bathroom at Cal's. For us, Cal's partly fills a void left behind by Lounge Ax's closing while still bringing up memories of when Tuman's was the Alcohol Abuse Center.

Next week the Chicago Sun-Times will discover the Green Mill and Rainbo Club.
Have you heard of this "Nelson Algren" fellow?
There is always Rossi's as a fallback.
Next week, ST will discover the news, too.
This reminds me of the CBS 2 segment "Where 2 go" and I've always thought of it as "Where not 2 go now." Same with 190 North, though, admittedly, I haven't ever watched it long enough to make a sound judgment. But that lady just seems to want to be cool but really isn't.
bekki that show is total filler. it came out in the mid-90s to appeal to the "friends" demographic and has sucked ever since. :D
Hasn't Cal's been doing shows for at least five years?
Thanks Chuck, for exposing the only decent place
left to drink after work down town! And grabe a bag of pork rynes. Next thing you know the Licoln Park crowd will be hanging there Spav,Plum Plum and the rest of the Lincoln Park twiddy birds. Once the lecherous owner( before I had arrived) said to my then girl friend "hello little girlie I got some candy down in the basement" Yea I dig the place, wish I was there now!
i always thought shows like 190 north were tv stations' way of fulfilling their requirement for community service broadcasting, but trying not to make them horribly drab.
that's why you see lots of PSAs late at night and why some music radio stations go to weird, dry talk shows for a few hours on sunday nights. it's part of their obligation to serve the public interest.
imagine that ... radio and tv that are local and actually serve a local community? that have local personalities that know a local audience and that play local music?
oh, the good old days.
Hasn't Cal's already been well-known for a long, long time? Regulars were complaining about the kiddies (ie complaining about me to me) 8 years ago when I worked in the Sears Tower. Last time I was in Cal's on a weekend I was one of the oldest people there and I'm not half way through my thirties.
Holy crap... that post reads almost as whiney as the folks from lo those not-so-many years ago. Premature aging!
Chicago Sun Times - just now figuring out Chicago. i agree with Spook - this place will be filled with preppy-indie kids from H&M before long ...
