Everyone mentioned, from Minstry to Wilco, fall somewhere between half-assed and competent. Add Material Issue and Urge Overkill to that roster. Chicago has yet to produce a rock band of true cultural significance.

I specifically said the ROCK bands were lame, because this city has produced blues, R&B, and hip-hop artists who've ranged from skillful to legendary in the history books.

Chicago rock bands are inferior compared to many other cities, and I really LOVE this city. That's just me.

Cheap Trick and lame should never be in the same sentence.

Unless you're talking about "The Flame."

oh bull shit on the "lame rock bands" thing. Cheap Trick is awesome, SP are great, and with that huge brush stroke you're saying that Ministry, Big Black, Shellac, Red Red Meat, and numerous others are crappy.

What about the band Chicago? They had some great stuff but then Terry Kath died and then descended into all-out 80s soft rock crapulence at the hands of one Peter Leslie Cetera.

From Cheap Trick to Fall Out Boy, Chicago has always produced lame rock bands. Always. I hate that about our city.

i'm sorry, i'm all for the whole 'taking chances' with songwriting and musical arrangements in songs and albums, but both Machina albums were an immediate left turn in the Pumpkins catalog - in my opinion. i think i started to wane off the Pumpkins after Adore came out because Billy seemed to be going into dreamy soundscape mode ... it was a hugely sharp contrast to previous albums starting with Gish (my favorite) and Siamese Dream (very close second) and Mellon Collie.

Zwan ... it was Billy's chance to make "his" music and ultimately i thought it was drivel. again, my opinion. it was like all of a sudden he was this spaceman complete with a soundtrack. sorry, but Bowie did it better.

Am I the only one who thinks this lawsuit is legit? Sure the "artistic integrity" cloak is bullshit, but I can totally see why they are doing it.

ps. Mike, they are playing Chicago in fall after they move center of opps back here and record new stuff.

Corgan and the Pumpkins began losing credibility when they came out with MACHINA (both albums) and then when he decided to break off and form Zwan -- if anything, he should be suing himself for defamation.

The notion that Corgan would blame anyone but himself for destroying his band's credibility with fans is laughable.

Can I just say fuck the Smashing Pumpkins, or I guess more specifically fuck Billy Corgan. I can't believe that fucking ass still hasn't played a show in Chicago with the reunited band.
