O.K., so Chicago isn’t known around the world as a fashion capital, but we’re working on it. Chicago Fashion Week will soon celebrate its second anniversary, helping the connoisseurs of couture to discover there’s something to see between the coasts.

Events like this weekend’s Shop Chicago, presented by Gen Art, may do the same. More than 80 local clothing and accessory designers will be featured at this giant style extravaganza, giving them greater exposure Chicago shoppers as well as the great fashion beyond.

As is fitting for such a chic event, Gen Art is careful to include an element of luxury. As you browse the racks, you can indulge in hair and makeup consultations, get mini spa treatments and of course, sip cocktails. Surprisingly this is all free, but if you want a sneak preview you can purchase a VIP ticket for $40 and get in an hour before everyone else. That will also buy you champagne, hors d'oeuvres, a goody bag and a special roped-off area to rest in when the common shoppers get too crazy-like. If that doesn’t make you feel like a fashionista, nothing will.

Great Hall at Union Station, 210 S. Canal Street.
Saturday, March 29th. 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. VIPs get in at 3:00.
