Um, at seventeen you can't vote, which means you can't be on a jury which means you can't have a jury of your peers which you are CONSTITUTIONALLY entitled to.

Unless you are 18, you shouldn't be tried as an adult.

As much as guns are a central part of all of this, I gotta say that we need to look at the culture of violence and decay that leads to this kind of tragedy. Things need to change.

What a tremendous waste.

Fed Up, You would be surprise at the amount about personal responsibility. I also
think some very very greedy people who lack morals
and humanistic traditions
make a lot of money and retain lots of undeserved power
because good people are afraid to question and challenged learned but untruthful myopic views and refuse to let go of mendacious paradigm projected by the mainstream power structure that end become a "crutch" for our "stability", just like religion.
This is why I make it a point to read widely and heavily even when I don't feel like it, because its the only way I find life worth living.

p.s I am also very dubious of those who call themselves well adjusted in this society

On the subject of high schools in the CPS system, For those who enjoy movies shot in Chicago, the movie "Cooley High" will be shown on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) tonight at 9:15 PM.

The movie was shot in 1975, but the story takes place in the 1960's. There are plenty of scenes of the Cabrini-Green area, with one of the main characters living in the Cabrini Row Houses, which are still there.

The bar that is the neighborhood hangout in the movie stood until just a few years ago. Located at the northwest corner of Elm and Larrabee, the site of the bar is now part of the grounds of the 18th District police station.

Edwin G. Cooley High itself (yes, it was a real high school) stood until the late 1980's on north side of Division Street at the end of Orleans.

this is so tragic how our communities can be so third world sometimes. hearing innocent students say how they fear going to school is especially heartbreaking. the causes and solutions are complicated, but everyone should at least be aware of what's going on outside their own neighborhood.

and prison rape is no laughing matter. i should know after doing a nickel for being caught with those small plastic baggies.

Wes Sabi

I don't quite no what to say except thanks for putting a human face on this tragedy. Not that it matters to this crowd. And I guess "thanks" isn't the right word either. I hope that its fiting to say thank you to your wife for her service. I'm sure she is in CPS teaching by choice numerous big and small goofy kid who like to draw but also get born into war savage zones due to no fault of their own, while clueless people point the finger at them instead of examining our own culpability and duplicity in the hopelessness, violence and despair that thrive in these schools and communities.

yup spook, it's daley's fault that social program after social program has created the environment that these kids were in. let's just throw some more money their way to create some housing, so kids like these could learn some responsibility. that plan seems to have worked well, hasn't it?

This is where I'm just plain nuts to wonder how many more dead bodies is it gonna take for some real conversations to occur about what's going on with these kids?

And Simeon at least has a decent principal who by the way is actually the person who made the original comment about the "suicide missions”.

On the other hand Duncan is clueless at best because the gangs will protect its members from being raped in jail

At worst, Duncan is a bold face liar because everybody who pays attention to the escalating violence in communities of color understands that the problem is that Daley in a rush to ethnical and economically cleanses this city knocked down CHA housing with no suitable replacement housing, or a strategy for dealing with the violence that lots of people predicted. No to mention the homelessness.

The same violence that occurs when he closed down Englewood High School. Rival gang get pushed into the same territory where police tactics possibly including staff levels are not working. And it aint even summer yet!
