An 18-year-old was beaten to death with a baseball bat at a party on Saturday night, making him the 23rd CPS student to be killed this year. Albert Vaughn, Jr, a student at Julian High School, was killed on the 7000 block of South Throop.
Vaughn was at a party at a few blocks from his house when two other guests got in a fight. Vaughn apparently tried to usher younger kids out of the party when he was struck twice with a metal bat. Police are still investigating if the fight was gang-related. [S-T, Trib, CBS, WBBM]

I made the point in another thread that children need to learn the difference between right and wrong at an early age. As obvious as that sounds it's important. That's why big brother programs are so important, to do things with kids that might not have male influences in their lives.
For some it's too late - like the kid who used the bat.
For others, younger kids, it's important to get involved, even if it's just one.
I should practice what I preach, however.

I think he's more commenting that there is a bit too much focus on guns as the problem rather than looking into the multiple more nuanced issues that actually cause the violence.
That, and I think we can all agree that the day guns are banned is a long long way away - thus perhaps it is more productive to look deeply at the issues which can be changed rather than stewing in some hippy utopia fantasy where there are no guns.
Is it really necessary to keep tallying these kids as CPS students? For the most part, they weren't killed at (or in conjunction with) school. They're kids. Plain and simple. Would it be any less tragic if they were students at Catholic schools?

Now that I got that off my chest. As Dan writes violence is the problem not guns. Yes guns make the violence more deadly and easier. Why spook and Navin do you feel that the offender is not to blame for his actions. This offender did not have accesse to a gun so he used what was available a bat. The city cannot outlaw the all items used as weapons. But daley can use guns as a smokescreen to divert attention from the fact he has failed to make progrees in fixing the schools and bringing jobs and services to violent areas of the city. Guns arent the issue but as long as you follow daleys lead and think about guns instead of the real problems you are grappling with the wrong issue.

@ophmarketing...I think it's important that we all realize these are kids being killed and a "CPS student" label gets that across. Whether the violence happens at school or not, they're children, and somehow we, as collective city, are allowing an environment to continue where anger and violence is the only response that seems to make sense.
@Matty...I completely agree. There are definitely programs that do their best to reach out to kids who, otherwise, would slip through the cracks. It's sad, but parents don't always do the job. Totally off topic but this is exactly why sex ed is needed in schools.

Kids are getting murdered because of a culture of violence ingrained in parts of our city, and the media sticks it on our public schools because it's easy and it sells advertising. I know we've got problems in our schools, but a story like this proves that there's more to it than that.
There is no one definitive book about the ingrained culture of violence in which inner city youth are enmeshed, but a standard is There Are No Children Here: The Story of Two Boys Growing Up in The Other America, by Alex Kotlowitz.
But I think a far better written book is called The Corner: A Year in the Life of an Inner-City Neighborhood, by David Simon,Edward Burns.
