with two more pieces from the same designer, John Rieben (via another PosterPlus and Worship Worthy). You can droll over more of his work here. See also: the Chicago Design Archive's 1960s entries. Our eyeballs are so happy right now.

Maybe its just me, but graphic designs/fonts were incredible in the 60s. also very simplistic and elegant. today you've got all sorts of ugly crap screaming in your face...just take one walk down the supermarket aisle to confirm that. its a shame.

font, or typeface, is actually a very interesting art form. Different typefaces can ilicit certain emotions just by the shape of letters. I saw that film Helvetica last year and I learned a lot. Never thought font could be so interesting...

There are other designers that followed the style in addition to Rieben and Massey. Walter Granville, Peter Teubner, John Greiner, Terry Westmacott to name a few more.

The classic "Swiss style" came the USA in the 1950s. Chicago was willing practitioner at this time. Remember, Mies van der Rohe was here. During the 60s two large design firms had a signature style. Unimark and Center for Advanced Research and Design. And Crate&Barrel likes it!

btw - Many of the entries in the CDA 60s section are not 60s work and we are working on getting dates. But you can spot the style.

As already mentioned, if you have not seen the movie "Helvetica" it is a must see if you like this style. The movie keeps coming back to the Gene Siskel Theatre to the amazement of executive director Jean de St. Aubin. There is a CD of this movie.
