Apple Rocks?
The Counting Crows are doing a free mini-concert at The Apple Store tomorrow. This is either a dream come true, or a complete nightmare, depending on how you view the band. We've always had a soft spot for the band's more rockin' tracks -- hey, don't judge us -- but admit we have never had the slightest urge to see them live. If you do, though, this is probably the least expensive way to do it. And if you're wondering why we're including this in today's Pencil this In, it's because you should probably get in line right now in order to have the slightest chance of actually seeing the band.

Bingo/Tango
Who thought of mixing bingo and tango? Who cares? It sounds awesome! Tonight at The Museum of Contemporary Art folks have the opportunity to play bingo while opting to throw in a tango lesson between cards. It's all part of the museum's Tuesday Evenings in the Cafe series.
220 E Chicago, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m., $8, 21+
He Said ... She Said
Ah, him versus her, and beer versus wine. Dogfish Head beer-man Sam Calagione, and master sommelier Marnie Old go head-to-head over which beers and wines go best with which meals. O.K., maybe it won't be as combative as we're trying to make it seem, especially since the whole reason they're making this appearance is to promote their book He Said Beer, She Said Wine, but wouldn't it be cool if it actually rolled out the way we imagined it?

Fig Dish played a few reunion shows a couple years ago, and a recording of one of those shows has just surfaced. Taped by an uber-fan at their Schubas show in 2006, a pal of the band has posted the resulting live performance for all to hear. We were there but admit we barely remember the end of the show due to the non-stop flow of Maker's Mark flowing our way that night, so it's nice to hear how everything ended up!

Stroger Makes Hollywood Play

YES!! I have been waiting for that Fig Dish recording for too long. Need to leave work, now...
i saw rhett miller at the apple store, and it was nice.
i like the counting crows .. a lot. i know it's just not "cool" to like them, but i do. so, there. i'm seriously considering getting a ticket to see them this year. i HATE the stupid ex-world music theater, though. grrrrrrrr.
one thing i tell people, and i have a hard time sticking to myself, is that if you like something, you like something. it shouldn't have to be a "guilty" pleasure. fuck what other people think. if it makes you happy, go to it. now ... how to get out of work.
I'll admit - there are probably enough Counting Crows tracks I like to make an actual record.
And I agree with Smussy - If you like something, own it. Don't dismiss it as a "guilty pleasure." My Kelly Clarkson iTunes collection agrees.
There is NOTHING guilty about Kelly Clarkson!
Don't know much about Counting Crows. They might sell more records if their singer loses those hair extensions. Looks like the love child of Robert Downey Jr. and Sideshow Bob.

Funny and compelling if you look at him. You can even imagine the oversized clown feet being cropped out of the picture.
I was going to say something like:
That giant tarantula on his head hasn't sucked all the juice out of his brain yet?
@ Smussy:
Rhett Miller is great musician ... don't ever compare him with the asshat in the picture above.
