Obama Delegate Shakes 'Monkey' Off Her Back

2008_04_lrs2.jpgLinda Ramirez-Sliwinski, the Carpentersville woman who was accused of racism for comparing two African-American children climbing a tree to monkeys, was told today she would be allowed to keep her position as an Obama delegate to the Democratic National Convention. After it initially appeared as though Ramirez-Sliwinski, also a village trustee, would "voluntarily" step aside, it seems that the campaign actually, you know, examined the facts and cooler heads prevailed. Obama spokesman Ben Labolt said, “It is clear that the incident was a misunderstanding." No kidding. Still no word yet on the $75 disorderly conduct ticket, which Ramirez-Sliwinski said she will challenge. [Trib]

a victory for common sense.

finally.

we've been a little light this week.

Someone should tell them to stop monkey-ing around and make one clear cut decision on the matter, rather than deeming it unacceptable than acceptable. . .

OMG, I MIGHT be racist now too!

My coworker pointed out that this was not racist, it was specieist. . .and monkeys everywhere should be TOTALLY offended.

good for her! now, her only problem is finding a more flattering dress to wear.

what kind of jackass would misinterpret an innocent comment like that? i thought the overzealous political correctness insanity ended 5-10 years ago. maybe it's just getting to carpentersville, wherever that is

Any news video footage of this story should have "Shock the Monkey" playing in the background.

Glad to hear it. The poor woman has been thoroughly embarrassed by a misunderstanding and an overreaction. Now the town needs to toss the bogus charge.

That's a chilling effect charge if I ever saw one.

You can be ticketed and fined for making people feel bad?

I say a hearty FUCK YOU to them that think that way.

Come get me.

Well as silly as this was.

Let’s not forget about the historical note of Blacks being compared to Monkeys for generations which included the Medical establishment up until the 1950’s.

And some commented about Georgetown Hoyas Allen Iverson being called a monkey. But more germane is that when Patrick Ewing was a Hoya at away games in the south, Bananas were tossed at him and signs were held up calling him a monkey

The late WEB Dubois had to spend a lot of time disproving this myth in American, that Black folks skulls were closer to apes.

In Rwanda the Belgium colonialist said that the Hutu were closer to being from apes which is why they needed to be ruled by the Tutsi who were closer to being European.

So while in this case it was wrong, the past should not be forgotten as well as the fact that this word is still used to denigrate Black folks.

With that being said the town should by her a new dress for the democratic convention.

p.s I'm still for Hilary!

regardless of race, kids do often act like monkeys. Short of hurling their own feces, it's hard to tell the difference between kids and monkeys. Political correctness needs to die.

Well, I thought she should have been arrested for hindering a child climbing a tree. That should be a natural right for children! Who's with me? No one ever told me not to climb a tree. Of course if I went to high I was told to come down.

Look at those arms. She's definitely got tickets to the gun show.

yea she could take you UTV and C-Ville is "what's really hood"

I'm a Republican but I agree with the Dems on on this.

She should stay as a delegate. She said something clearly wrong for our sensitive times but did not mean it in a racial way.

Common sense came through?!?!
Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle!
