The 50-foot tall Berwyn Spindle is up for auction on e-Bay. There are no bids yet for the sculpture made of eight ‘70s and ‘80s era cars, which lists for $50,000, plus $100,000 shipping costs. The sculpture, commissioned by Cermak Plaza Associates, is probably most popular for its appearance in the 1992 movie Wayne’s World.
The center developer and the artist, Dustin Shuler, couldn’t agree on a way to market the sculpture to raise funds for its repair. The sculpture is pocked with rust and covered with pigeon poop.
The sculpture needs to be removed to make way for a Walgreen’s.

Stroger Makes Hollywood Play

They couldn't agree on a way to market it? How about this one: Manufacture detailed 8-inch tall replicas of the sculpture and sell them for $30 each.
I'd buy two.
Thank god they're finally getting a Walgreens, they're so scarce around here.
Th artist owns the trademark and from what I had heard, he doesn't like the idea of making money off it. However, that is just hearsay.
Just to pick nits... it's copyright the artist owns, not trademark.
this would look so sweet in millennium park.
Anyone want to make a guesstimate on what shipping costs on an eight car sculpture?
I second Millenium park. Stick the Bean on top of it, and then put the whole thing in the world's largest martini glass.

WTF? There's already a Walgreen's in that Plaza. Why do they need another one? Why don't they put the Walgreen's where the long-closed Service Merchandise is?
Speaking as a former Berwyn resident, this is utterly lame. Getting rid of the Spindle will banish the uniqueness from the town which is, I suppose, the intention so that idiot leadership can beckon white bread yuppies. It's a shame as there was always neat stuff in that Plaza.
I hope they wash all the bird poop off first. That beast is nasty.
@Dig
Speaking as a former, uppity Riverside resident, I think Berwyn will have loads of uniqueness left should the spindle go the way of the garbage sculpture (Cermak Plaza sign) that once shared the site. Snap!
But seriously, why build the Walgreen's in the middle of the parking lot? And if you must, why not just move the sculpture?
If they touch The Egg Store someone's gonna get dealt wit.
Heyyyyy Riverside! I used to live there, too. Hugh, did you see that the Riverside stop on the Burlington got some love in the Lake House (the movie)?
