Spook: You are as edgy as some old fart who's been drinking since 3 in the corner bar, who will spurt out nonsense at anyone who walks in. You are a fraud, but I think you know this, because no one as ignorant as you are--and who pretends to be smart--can be real. The only thing I believe from you is that you have watched "The Wire," but that's probably bullshit as well.

How's that Ming dynasty treating you, fraud?

Oh and "just too" came from Old Face Andre when he discribed O'mar as a terrorist, blowing up stuff "just too"

O.K Gorilla that one building sucks, just that one. Better?

If it was in the Paris I'd say it represents really bad architecture in Paris. But some how I don't think it would be allowed to be built in Parish or New York City. Maybe Jersey, but not New York. And remember the above is speculation.

P.S.

Pinko yea o.k. I just reread what I wrote and its still a Jesse Owens Jump, to confuse my comment about "really really really bad midwestern architecture" with Chicago architecture as a whole. Even at the best Thai restaurant, there is gonna be a bad dish. Marina Towers is one of those dishes.

p.p.s

Pinko, I'm not talking about Chicago!!!!!!!! I'm talking about "Marina Tower, isn't that what the topic is about????? Reread what I said. Its clear.

Magilla, I am fair and honest, I don't say things, "just too", so you best back up off me. My statement clearly was about a ugly building

Actually Matty Chicago has the most diverse architecture in the world thanks to the Chicago Fire, of course only in Chicago would we blame it on a cow

The only "history" to that place is the history of really really bad midwestern architecture...

Really? Because aside from being the birthplace of the skyscraper, Chicago is also home to the world-renowned and influential Chicago School style of architecture...

Daniel Burnham, Dankmar Adler, Louis Sullivan, John Root, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright. All laughingstocks of the architectural world, right?

Sorry, Spook, but we've got your beloved New York beat hands down in this area. Look no further than our iconic skyline for evidence of that. New York? Without any regard for either composition or harmony, their disjointed skyline looks like a three-year on a sugar high went nuts with his wooden blocks...

The only "history" to that place is the history of really really bad midwestern architecture for
granny and grand paw Florida crowd, the young prostitutes and the rats from the Chicago River that reside there. I think Dick's Last Resort is the perfect place for all of the above to mix and mingle. Maybe they can have senior discounts since the rats will eat free.

The one nice thing about Dick's River East spot is the dock. Yeah, the main restaurant is trash, but it's fun to eat and drink while watching the Coast Guard patrol that little inlet.

I don't think any restaurant, however tacky, will hurt Marina City's historic look very much.

The real risk to a Bertrand Goldberg building is the risk to the Prentice Women's Hospital building in Streeterville. The city should just end the suspense and landmark it.

I guess the real issue here is how we define protection and what should be protected. Is the base area of the Marina Towers complex really the unique or culturally significant portion of the building? Will glass-style retractable doors really destroy the character of the towers (the base is already solid glass from what I have seen)? I wonder if anyone raised a fuss when cheesecake factory built that f**king ridiculous awning outside the lower level of the hancock. In the end, I think mss2400 is right that the residents simply don't want a tenant they feel is tacky. Historical protection is simply a way to keep them out, gain community support, and not sound snobish.

Do you think Dick's can change their design to something less offensive to the residents? Of course not. The residents just don't want a tacky place like Dick's in their complex.

I don't think the presence of Dick's (which, at best, will be a temporary occupant of Marina City)can do any long term damage. Irrespective of how this turns out, however, I think that the city should take a serious look at giving landmark protection to Marina City, the IBM Building, the Hancock Center and other modern buildings. It's unfortunate that this issue arises in this context.

I agree w/ad. While I personally am not a patron of Dick's, the crowd does not strike me as being much different than the touristy type crowd that ventures to most River North restaurants/nightspots. And while maybe the aesthetics of the garage door maybe their main complaint, I do not think a bar 20 floors below the nearest condo will be overly loud. I mean you are already in the 2nd largest CBD in the country, so its not like Marina Towers are in some quiet, bucolic location.

Considering most of the acts that get booked into house of blues as of late, I refuse to believe Dick's customers will add that much of a blemish to the place. Isn't Dick's more of a tourist trap than anything else to begin with?? I've never been in one, are the customers really that noisy or trashy?? I've walked by the current location on the way to the AMC East a ton of times. It has never struck me as anything more than a bar/restaraunt--never as an out of control, or outwardly trashy looking place. I know the gimmick is for the staff to insult the customers, but how does that spill out into the street or the condo common areas? This just seems blown out of proportion to me.

I think you can make the argument that Marina City deserves landmark status. It's architecturally unique, it's strongly associated with the Chicago skyline...I guess there are probably factors beyond that, but on the surface, it seems reasonable to me.

And dear god, if they were going to open a Dick's on the ground floor of my building, I would move SO fast...
