I'm not a wagering man A2, but I'd be willing to bet that the above is the most intelligent thing you have ever said. Keep reading those books, Buck-O!

Nice double-speak. But hey, we probably have a "different conception" of logic.

Jezz A2, Where did I say that the Chippewa walked the Trail of Tears?????? Now of course you're gonna get all huffy because I said Chippewa the Cougar walked the Trail of Tears.

And Russel Means would also say that the Native American conception of land ownership was far different than that of the Europeans. Just like the African conception of slavery was vastly different than European chattel slavery.

But I guess if you want to be technical- just too, you could accuse me of portraying Native Americans as “saintly pacifist icons”, if you want to be purposely argumentative, that is. It would be wrong of course. But seems like real dialogue is not what you’re looking for.

But as you’ve read a thousand-plus books, compared to perhaps my four or five, I look forward to seeing you bring your historical perspective of said culture to Chicagoist, on more of a regular basis.
Instead of nit picking when some one else does it.

Thank you Yoknapatawpha!

I have always loved and apperciated Native American culture and history as long as I can remember.

I find the simplistic and shockingly prevelant historical view of "them" as essentially hippies at one with nature and each other nauseating.

Matilda, he has points which are probably defensible, but uses incorrect information to present them!

And its funny because they certainly were not fighting over "land" before some body’s ancestors wearing tacky buckle shoes
and stupid hats showed up talking about "Thanks Giving"!!!

Well, that's patently wrong according to the Ojibwa's own traditions. They were constantly at war with the Sioux before the French stumbled upon them in the mid-17th century. American Indians had a whole network of cultures equally as complex as any other... empires, wars, trade networks. Surprise!

Spook,

The Chippewa were on the Trail of Tears?

Really?

Because the thousand-plus books I have read on the subject have always said that was the Cherokee.

You don't think that Native Americans fought over land before Europeans came here?

Spook, that is an indefensible position. Russel Means himself would concede that point.

A2

Don't you think the person( Me, Myself, and I) who brought up the Chippewa or the Ojibway in the first place probably knows their history????????? And its funny because they certainly were not fighting over "land" before some body’s ancestors wearing tacky buckle shoes
and stupid hats showed up talking about "Thanks Giving"!!!
Yea the pilgrims caused all sorts of internal beefs, just like they did in other countries as they "matured" into the roll of international colonialist.

And I'm sure The Chippewa would be honored for such a noble creature( who they had mad respect for) that was slain during a its own "Long March/Trail of Tears" after being crowded out of its territory by housing construction, to be named after them. I'm sure THEY would get the connection!

Smussy, you traitor!

You are either with us or against us!

Sparky, How do you stand, Madame, on the
Chippewa name?

The cougar pooped in the back yard of one of my son's classmates. (At least, that's what they assume, since it was shot just about six houses from there and the mystery poop was epically larger than any their dog ever manifested.) They have three young kids who, needless to say, play back there a lot. Much as I wish the cops could have tranked the animal, I also understand just removing it from the neighborhood as quickly and permanently as possible.

Spook,

The Chippewa were warriors who fought many battles with other tribes over land, and drove the Sioux out of the Midwest because... yep, they wanted the land. I doubt the dead braves would want you invoking their names for the purpose of whining.

I thought they said the cougar attacked an officer...oh yes...here it is:

the mountain lion jumped a fence and appeared to menace officers

In that situation, I'd blast away too -- if I were the one being menaced, or if I saw that someone else were being menaced. After all, the Sun-Times says:

"If you have to move, backing away slowly and deliberately is the way to do it. And you need to be prepared to fight back."

There's good cause for these cautious tactics.

"Their leaps are incredible, 15 feet at a bound," Patterson said. "Their closing speed is so much faster than anything you could muster to get away."

...who really feels bad for this animal?

Judging by most of the comments here (my own included), I'd say plenty of us...

Feeling sorrow over the death of this beautiful (and yes, dangerous) wild animal on the one hand, and acknowledging that putting it down was the right thing to do on the other, are not mutually exclusive...

its a fucking dangerous animal. it would rip you apart if it had the chance. even daley had a soundbite saying it had to be shot because it was about to attack an officer. animal control was on the way, police were on loudspeakers telling residents to stay in their homes, but i mean come on. who really feels bad for this animal?

lets call him Ham Sandwich

Nice Annie F.

Your are so right!

Instead of tranquilizing this magnificent and majestic creature that managed to travel all that way, it was right to just kill it because of "public safety"! Because WE deserve to be safe because.....well, where Numeral Uno! And even though we are Numeral Uno we've made the world safe for all including those in Iraq.

Oh and now that Chicago’s finest pumped bullets into it's brain, lets US name its carcass!

Why? well because we have to keep the entertainment going.

We deserve to get more entertainment mileage out of the dead Cougar even though we murdered it.

It’s only right and proper that We -Numeral Unos- be entertained. And let’s give the dead cat a distinctly human male name, ironic because the poor creature had no human status of protection

I think we should name it "Chippewa" after the Native American Tribe that good folks like Annie F's great great great ancestors slaughtered in the name of “Public Safety” because the "Chippewa's ranged from Black Hills of South Dakota to Illinois.

Now don’t every body rush up to show a Spook some love now. Oh and I still have not received my C
Commentator of the Month of April shirt, I hope its in the mail!

p.s. Chicagoist keep showing pictures of different live cougars, don’t post the pictures of the dead one, because that would rain on our entertainment

that S-T photo is HORRIFYING. i thought it was going to be the photo/shot i've been seeing with the cougar from the back, lying on its side. mega sad.

aside from that:

1. it's sad. i don't know, i guess because it's a big cat, and it's wild and who wants to see a cat who doesn't mean any malicious harm to be gunned down by cops? no one. BUT

2. it's wild. and it will eat us. because it's lost in the city. and it may or may not be hungry and it may or may not be fearful. and it will chomp on us. and while i really wish they could have done something different, at the end of the day if it comes to me and cougar/puma/mountain lion, i hope someone picks me to save.

3. i think part of the outrage is because chicago cops don't really have a great rep right now. their valor has been lost for lack of discretion as of late ... well, as of the last decade or so. so, i think that might be contributing to the underlying anger over the death of this cat.

4. what is also tragic is that the coverage of the death of a cougar in roscoe village makes the national news and the video goes up on yahoo headlines, and kids in the CPS are getting slaughtered at a terrifying rate, and ... where's the dateline special?

I am less worried about a cougar policy and I for one will not be satisfied until the CPD codifies it's saber tooth tiger contingency plan. It is ridiculous that there is nothing in place to deal with such animal whose range once covered all of Illinois.

i concur, hobo cougar... fantastic!

seriously though, wtf? the tribune too? how can any of these people really think that animal control should have a wild cougar humane tranquilization policy and/or protocal to follow? this incident is so bizarre that you can't predict it's actual occurence! the cougar had to be killed to protect the safety of civilians in the CITY! this wasn't a case of a lone jogger out in a northern california preserve getting attacked. those folks need to take necessary precautions & law enforcement there should be prepared. not necessarily here! this critter was in a residential urban area. i'm totally distraught over the death of such a beautiful animal, but i have to concede out of pure common sense and practicality that it had to be put down. ugh.

my vote is to simply name it johnny.

You're not being fair to the Trib. They're not second-guessing the cops; they're just saying that the cops could be second-guessed, maybe. There's quite a bit of difference--between "wishy washy" and "meta wishy washy," specifically.

That may be the worst editorial I've ever read. Practically every sentence is a guide on how not to write about, well, anything ever.

This incident reminds me of the time my roommate's friend who lives on Sheridan in Rogers Park woke up to gunfire. Expecting it was just another night in Rogers Park, she got on her hands and knees and crawled to the window. To her surprise, the gunfire had come from police who had shot a rabid dog in her building's courtyard. The next morning, the dog was gone, of course, but the CPD hadn't cleaned up the remaining blood. How thoughtful.

Also, Hobo Cougar. Amazing.

hopefully they can track the cougar's family down and give them a cash settlement, in true CPD style.
