37 Shot Over the Weekend

2008_4_21.shootings.jpgAt least 37 people were shot this weekend, 7 fatally, and at least 7 victims were under 18. Only one person has been charged in any of the shootings so far, and in that case, police recovered an AK-47 assault rifle at the scene.

Police superintendent Jody Weis said there are "too many weapons out there," and cited warmer spring temperatures as a "contributing factor." He said at a press conference that "no city is immune from the proliferation of illegal guns, gangs and drugs."

Police keep track of shootings in 24-hour increments, and between midnight Friday and midnight Saturday, 22 people were shot; over the same period last year, 19 were, and in 2006, 21. Overall, crime is slightly down across the city. [CBS 2's full rundown of all the victims, Trib, S-T. That map is of the addresses I could find.]
