Stop...With the Silly Signs, Oak Lawn

By Margaret Lyons in News on Apr 23, 2008 4:56PM

2008_4_23.stop.jpgSorry, cheeky mayor of Oak Lawn. Your cheesy stop signs that say "In the Name of Love" and "Right There Pilgrim" under the traditional "STOP" are apparently a violation of federal rules about road signs.

The Federal Highway Administration and the Illinois Department of Transportation laid the smack down on Mayor Dave Heilmann's attempt to get drivers' attention, saying his joke signs violate the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, which is a surprisingly interesting read. The MUTCD says only stop signs can be octagon-shaped, and Heilmann's dad-style yuks violate that policy. Heilmann says he's going to try other options.

Psst. Mr. Mayor. Just let vandals have their silly, silly way. [Southtown Star, photo of sign vandalism by Amy in Chicago]
